Shifter getting stuck

Shifter getting stuck
i have an auto 89 se. Sometimes if i shift from reverse to drive, the shifter will still be in reverse, or sometimes it might slip into neutral. When i start the car, sometimes i have to hit the shifter forward when its in park, because the car will not start.
Is this a significant problem, it isn't too me, but could it lead to something more serious? I've also been close to a few accidents because i've shifted and accelerated and i thought it was in a different gear then i really was. Can this be fixed with by me, with what little knowledge i know about cars?

nope! not a significant problem going by your description. i would say your bushings need to be replaced, which is a very common issue with the third gen. i have the same problem, albeit it is not nearly as bad as yours. it is a small job, even a diy if you are so inclined.

it would be best to get them from the dealership....ask for tranny shifter bushings.they are fairly cheap. i am sure the fsm has info on replacing them. as far as i know, there is no write-up by an org member. autozone has an online fsm. check out http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiB...ginRepairGuide
