EXt Door Molding project...I know this has been talked about a lot

Well today my boss told me that my car looked good except for the fact that the door moldings look awful. So I got stuff from work(Sherwin Williams). Which was oops that worked ok to wet in down and just some throw away clothes.

I pulled with off with the help of a blow dryer easily. But that stupid glue stayed on the door pretty good. I went to HD to get a plastic putty knife and single edge razor srcapper. Now those work great except for the fact that I pulled and scrathed some of the paint off but I can get some touch up paint.

But my question is I still have some glue on there not really that much. But it does not look clean like the rest of my car. What can I get the rest of it off with. Can just put it under high water pressure and make it come off??

Any suggestions would be great. We are having a meet in the ATL and I dont want to it look like this.

Pics will be made soon

HAHA!! No man if there were holes I would not be doing this.

James----Yes you are right this is a job that takes forever. I quit for now because it was too time consuming but it looks ok although I have some paint missing in some spots.

All that chemical stuff do not work I guess because I did not let it sit look enough but oh well it is almost done.

That's what I figured, but How does it look? Does it flow with the lines of the car?

Take some alcohol (rum, vodka, etc.) - it should wipe out all the glue nicely.
BTW, did you know that you can black out (with a blackout tape) these moldings without removing 'em?

removing adhesive beneath side molding

I did this a year or so ago. I used 3M adhesive remover to get off the last of the adhesive. I also used an adhesive remover wheel. BOth of these are available at auto paint stores. The adhesive remover wheel is like a round eraser that you chuck into a like a pneumatic grinder fixture or, like me, into my electric drill. You run it at high speed, 1000 RPM or better and it just erases the adhesive without marring the paint. Worked like a champ.

look at my sig, or James' site, or Chris' site or a number of others that have done it. No holes just glue.

The BEST thing to take it of is a $15 or less rubber wheel that you put on your drill and take it right off. A lot easier and faster too. Dont have to worry about scraping your paint either.

yeah, awsm66 I guess I never noticed you had removed yours, I just didn't look that hard. I like to door handles too. I like how the guy with the orange colored max that is slammed all the way to the ground looks, but I don't remember his name. I think he filled in the gap after removing the molding.

There is a Orange maxima that was in a magazine that filled in the moldings. That is probably who he is talking about.

Thanks for all the help

I have not completed the job yet but I am probably going to that rubber wheel thing and some adhesive remover to clean the last bit of glue off.

I guess I could use the vodka or rum and consume some too at the same time but that might make the process a little slower.

I got 2 door done so far...I've been using paint thinner and an old t-shirt as a rag...work pretty well...I tried MEK (methylethylketone) but that just made a mess...was too strong...

A couple more hours and I'll have them done...

WOW yeah man MEK is way too strong we sell that at Sherwin Williams. That stuff is a little to toxic too it is used to thin down like the paint on the huge buildings that needs to have really good adhesion.

Paint thinner is not that bad either. But I would not recommended it. Something like oops and goo gone will work just fine. Not quite has powerful as mineral spirits/paint thinner.

But glad it is working out for you.

The originator now refers to himself in third person?

I still say the rubber wheel is the best and fastest way. Its not too expensive and my time is worth more to me than what it cost. If I did it to another maxima I would use the rubber wheel. I didnt worry about it on mine because I just stripped it off with the rest of the paint .

Chemicals usually work better than the brute force method....

So far i have seen that later the sticky tapey stuff with a coat of paint thinner, then walk away and come back 20-30 mins later, then it is pliable, and you can remove most of it with your fingers, then work the rest of it off with a rag and some elbow grease!

Works wonders.

you spent too much time in one spot...that will wear through the paint. You have to be careful. Also you may have too high a speed drill.

Those rubber wheels are the way to go, just turn your regulator down to like 30-40psi and go really fast up and down on a piece of the tape, start from the right and work your way left.

Then do that goo gone or whatever you decide to use, either way it all works the same as gasoline. This will take off very small pieces or leftover tape or glue.

Then get the doors cut and polished, then do your touchups.
