I love my transmition

i was commuting to class when i notice my car felt sluggish. so i stop took a look under the car for leaks. nothin looked bad or broken. so i get in my car put it in drive hit the gas and i don't move any where.

i brought it to a transmition specialist. he told me first gear is gone and second is on its way.The part i couldn't believe is that it's going to be 14 to 18 hundred to fix/rebuild my tranny. it suckes now i have to drive a dads slow *** lancer.

Is it a GXE? If so,the good 'ol RE4F02A strikes again... I hate mine with a passion. They are such fragile trannies. Mine started going out around 146k. I had it rebuilt, and now it's going out again. The RE4F02A has to be the worst Nissan tranny ever.

Why do trannies cost so much to fix anyways? Might as well save your $1800 for another car, preferably with a manual tranny, that's what I would do.

I dunno why

Just after driving some other 3rd gens (and the 5th) mines just really not smooth, lol. First gear grinds unless your going like 3-5mph.

I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap spare that I can either just throw on or rebuild (wanna try something new anyway )

I dont even really beat on it.

Check the clutch pedal freeplay and or bleeding the clutch pedal again. You do have the short shifter so that's gonna make things a little more notchy. This tranny is not as smooth/tight as my current one though.

supposedly the 92-94 GXE trannys were made better internally...but that has been an unconfirmed rumor for years. I think its more so the newer model GXE just don't have as many miles on them and haven't crapped out yet

More than likely, the age factor is the case.

borg warner **** box strikes again. you can get a rebuild kit for these for around 300 dollars from drivetrain.com if you want to attempt a rebuild yourself. i've never really seen the inside of these trannies but i fear that i'd freak out once i did and not want to try rebuilding one.

i've always heard the 92-94 trannies were stronger but after hearing lophix's tranny before the swap i know that can't be the case. the input shaft bearing in that was definitely toast. the input shaft had tons of play in it... definitely not good.

Any idea what the problem may be if I have to push pretty hard to get my shifter into first unless I rev it a bit?
I have a 5spd from a 91 GXE, and swapped from an auto.

syncros most likely. by looking at the gears i have out of my original tranny these things should have definitely came with steel syncros instead of the brass. once they go out i think you'd be screwed.

I think DA-MAX has it right. It's more a timing issue. The 89-94 GXE's are all up there in miles, and an auto tranny that lasts 130-175K before it craps out isn't all that bad. I think a lot of the reason we think they are crap is that they are all failing right now, but that's because most of us have a lot of miles on our cars.

If you showed me a LOT of failures in the sub-100K mileage range (not from abuse..), then that might be something. Mine died at 175K, and it sucked to put out $1800, but still.... 175K? That seems pretty good to me.
