Air flow sensor?

A couple of days ago I started having problems with my 1989 Maxima. It started good in the morning. About 15 miles after driving I stopped to get breakfast. I got out and 5 minutes later I was back in starting the car. It didn't start. It turned and turned but nothing. It smelled like gas all over. After turning and pressing the gas a good 5 minutes it started with rough idle and sputtering. Waited another 5 minutes then it was good. I bought new spark plugs and gas filter and PCV valve. Replaced that. Went to work and no problem after that. The next day I did the same routine thinking the car was fine. But it did the same thing all over again. I did everything exactly like the other day. On Saturday I took my wife to work. After leaving her there I stepped on the gas hard but it wanted to turn off. After a couple of miles it just turned off on me. After doing the same thing as the previous 2 days it started.

I need to know whats going on. Is it the airflow sensor???
The mechanic looked at my car before all this happened because of the vacuum hoses. On saturday I noticed the airflow sensor top had a small crack on top of it. If anybody has had a similar problem like the one I have spoken about please help me out.

Thanks

A crack could do it, do you have a picture?

If it's a problem during start/idle it won't be a maf sensor.

accually that statment is incorrect because when my MAF went bad my cars idle would fluctuate and randomly die when i would push the clutch in at lights but when i unplugged it the car idled fine but obviously wouldnt rev above 2500rpms

overall the car ran very porly with alot jerkyness through the power band
