Speedometer stopped working
#6
I had this happen around 120k, I went out and bought the new part to put it in. I think it was between 40 and 80 bucks, not really sure but I ended up getting the wrong part anyway. Not sure if they screwed up or I gave them the wrong model number but it was just slightly different from the one that came off the car.
Anyway, after we had taken the old one out and then realized the new part wouldn't work we put the old sensor back in. What do you know everything started working again! This happened one other time about 10k later. Since then it's been working without problems for 50k on the original part. I think the problem is the part can "slide" out of the socket.
The sensor is I believe slightly under the brake fluid resivor and towards the radiator, it has a small rubber cap. Try just pushing down on the rubber cap and see if it moves back in. Maybe it will save you some cash.

Mine goes in and out intermittently. Yours is probably the speed sensor on the tranny, mine is a short somewhere behind the cluster. I am just not willingto sacrifice my se cluster, nor do I have the funds to fix it as of yet (only car and all) if it is a5 spd then in fifth 1g is about 25 to 30, 2g is about 45mph, and 3g is about 80. Mine does work more often with the ac on. can't figure that one out yet???

well i bought a speed sensor from courtesy without first testing the continuity on the harness. there was none, but at the cluster i had continuity. i've been too lazy to run new wires from the sensor to the ecu. i have a feeling too that the plastic pinion is a little chewed up. i spent 120 on the sensor, so i'm not really putting more into this.

Keep in mind you want to get that solved as quick as you can without putting a lot of mileage on the car otherwise you will have to claim when you sell the car that the mileage on the odemeter is not correct. So when people are car shopping they may get nerveous when you tell them that. You are required by law to disclose that.
