Odometer and brakes question VG

Someone professional finally drove my car and told me the definition of what I felt for the brakes: they work but the pedal is spongy. What would that be? Just a week ago I installed the new struts and checked the calipers and pads: the calipers all work, none is seized and there is about 50% of the pads. I have about 140k kms and the car is 1993 GXE.

Now, the odometer stopped working about a year ago. I tried the cleaning process outlined somewhere on the Net for ZX300 (spraying WD40 into the motor etc.) to no avail: the motor was perfectly clean and the ony thing I found wrong was the endless screw, which I moved back towards the motor - still the odometer does not work.
I tried another cluster which was removed from the car where odometer worked, it only worked for 45 kms and stopped dead. I put mine back in, it worked for 2 kms and stopped. What the hell???

is there any air in your brake lines? air is the usual culprit for a spongey pedal in my experience

That must be it. I am goint to get the fluid flushed and refilled with new one over the weekend and see what happens. Juts thought there might be something else that I was not aware of (as I am not aware of lots of things, sigh...)

I rebled the system and some air came out of the front driver side caliper, but those few bubbles were it and the pedal did not get much harder.
I got MIDAS to look at the brakes 'cause I have their calipers and pads on the back and they found the brakes 'working fine'... Still my pedal is much softer than in any other car I am trying to drive.
Does it sound like my master cylinger goes? The new ones are so costly, would it be possible to swap it for a newer Maxima's used one? Are 93' GXE Maxima's master cylinders interchangeable with any newer models? I do not have ABS.
