Help: a grinding noise from front when backwards

94 Maxima, auto.
The front wheels will make a grinding noise when I back my car. This happened just a few days ago. It doesn't make such noise when the car has been running for a while or when I drive forward. what is the possible problem? I am going to have a look of the front braks this saturday. Any input will be appreciated.

wheel bearings or brakes

posibly tranny but i check the others first

Or suspension and engine. Might was well cover the rest.

What do you mean by tranny? I have the tranny refurbished last Sept. and it is still under warranty. If it is such a problem, what will cause that sound.
BTW, how to check wheel bearings?
