Track speed troubles....

OKay...I put my 94 Maxima SE on a 10 mile straightaway and found that 5th gear is lagging like crazy... 4th put me to around 125 mph and then 5th slowly but surely brought me to 141 mph towards the end of this track... I'd say it took me abouta good 2~3 minutes to accumulate the speed after shifting into 5th. As for the question... has anyone else put their car on a track to find their top speed? And if possible can you go faster or is there some rev. limiter or speed gov.? Asfor the specs on my current Maxima... it's all stock, which I must admit surprised the crap outta me. I look forward towards your responses.

My 1989 SE VG had a limiter...125mph was the max without going down a hill then it got up to 132ish

um, I don't ever recall having a speed governor of any kind and I have owned two VE 5-speed Maximas. Both have been to the 145 mark on the speedo.

I have driven a car with a speed governor (88 celica governed at 115) and you know when you hit it because it feels just like when you hit the rev limiter -- blaaaaahhhhhh.

I will say that a possible source for your problem is known as "heat soak" and it caused by a bad knock sensor. Look in the stickies for information concerning this. Not to say that is definitely your problem (there are other possibilities, too) but it's likely.

I've taken my 5spd. maxima to just past the 145 mark with no problem but could never seem to find a stretch of road long enough to go even further. I have also recently taken my auto. maxima to 145 and thats it. I have not gone past it. i think 145 is fast enough for now.

my vg was an auto, so...probably limited by the tranny perhaps? got up to 125 and kind of sat there, nothing like other speed limiters that i have experienced, but there was definitely a speed ceiling or sorts...

Route 3 from braintree to plymouth record stands at [7 mins]

My friend used to have an 89 SE and he had the same problem you did; he would get to 125 and the car would seem to just "sit" there. However, after he blew his tranny at 221K, when he had it rebuilt; his car was able to go past the 125 mark no problem. I don't understand what they did to his car; but according to him, his shift points were lower, making his car a little quicker in the 1/4; and also his top speed had increased.

"1990 VG Auto" 130 - 135 no problem , no more room on the thruway seemed like it had more left it was only at like 3800-4000 rpms. Check your tranny fluid maybe its low causing it to loose pressure at high speeds dunno dont really know a hole lot about trannys.

VE's don't have a speed governor. Eventually the wind will limit you to a certain speed depending on how much power your car has, or I guess you could eventually hit redline in 5th gear and that would keep you from going any faster too. Bryan H has been a member here for years and actually got ticketed doing 163 in his VE 5 spd, but he had alot of mods.

curious thoughts...

What to say... thankyou all for your imput... um... pretty much to find a closed track around your own area shouldn't be hard... Over here in El Paso TX... they do have the track open to street and non-street cars on weekends... always make sure there's an ambulance in case something goes wrong... um... as for top end speed... I was allowed to do 3 runs... initially on the first run, my Maxima bogged down at 135... on the second I was able to reach 139 and on my final run I hit 141~142 to be exact... quite possible the problem could be because I have well over 176,000 miles on my car... but I know my vehicle is in top condition... I also know that when red lining, for some reason it seems like the clutch or transmission disengages??? I don't know exactly why... Also, when pushing the 140 mph mark I still had some 500~750 rpms to go, not too close to red lining but still a most hair rasing experience. Oh well, at least there are good people who know the grand performance of the mighty mighty Maxima.

Drive on!
