Locking or Non-Locking Differential?

Ok, I got good news. I found a VE 5spd tranny w/76k mi for $300. Bad news is the seller dosn't have the trans-axle code. The car has long since been crushed. Can I still find out if this transmission is a LSD or not? The VIN is JN1EJ01F1NT106603. I looked all over the tranny and couldn't find a stamp. The only number visible was 79E. I know the differential is internal but is there anyway to tell the model by looking at it?

I really wanna pick this up because the miles are so low and the price is right. Any help would be appreciated.

Look through the axle holes in the transmission.. if you can see all the way through it should be LSD.. if not, then it's not...

Right?

Edit* Also like Mr. Gone said... a tranny code ending in "V" is LSD.. but I guess that does you no good since you dont have the car ID plate or anything and you said it's not on the transmission.

Nonetheless I'd venture to say you have an LSD transmission. Although non-LSD VE transmissions apparantly exist, I dont think any of us have actually heard of/seen one..

One more edit* My spare VE 5spd LSD tranny has "96 E #1" stamped in it, if that helps any

Thanx for the help guys. I'll take a look @ it the next time i'm in central fl. I did find this link though....

http://www.edmunds.com/used/1992/nis...nav..5.Nissan*

It says that limited slip was a standard feature. Doesn't this mean you'd have to get a non-limited slip as an option? Doesn't make sense to me. Anyways, I think I'll pick it up and take my chances. If it was a standard feature getting a non-limited slip would be like hitting the lottery.

Do you want chocolate chip or macadamia? Thanx a lot man I was hoping the VIN could be of some service. How'd you search for the VIN? A Nissan tech told me you can only go back 10 yrs. Regardless, you da man.

You can only go back 10 years on their computers... the software I have stops at 2000, so 10 years back covers most 3rd gen Maxes as well.
