Can I rebuild the VE, without VTC's

I was curious if there was a way to rebuild my motor and get rid of the VTC's altogether. I read something in a previous thread about putting an exhaust sprocket in place of the VTC sprocket or something like that. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Why don't people ever name the source? ie... I heard, read, dreamt etc...?

I think I mentioned that it would be something interesting to look into.

If the exhaust side worked, it would be a stroke of luck. ie.. if the sprocket and key happened to line up right. I bet you would have to make your own marks.

Also the cam timing would be static. You would have to decide where to permanently have it. High end/low end/middle of the road etc..

Personally, if you have to ask.....

How much experience do you have with engines and more specificly, VE engines?

I suppose a custom adjustable cam sprocket could be made. Don't see why not.

You can be the first Rosamax. Do the reasearch and spend the $$ to get it done.

I said it *might* be possiable to use the exhaust sprockets on the intake cams in a thread where Bryan H and I were talking about him having 300zx cams. I haven't tried to see if it will work yet though, as its not high on my priority list.

If I get time in the next few days, I'll grab my cams and the sprockets out of my box of junk...
maybe I can run them to my fab shop and have them make me some adjustables.

I'll try to find that thread for you Jeff, I think you and MrGone were both in it, but I'll have to double check. I'm not going to lie to you, I don't have much experience with the internals of engines, specifically the VE, but I don't have a problem researching and learning. I'd like to rebuild my VE in the future and I'm just kind of curious as to what would be involved in getting rid of the VTC's altogether. I was just hoping to borrow some brains and research from someone else if they had thought it through already.

I found it, Czar mentioned something about it. Is this guy still around or what?

hold on a sec..........300ZX cams on a maxima? Is this possible? That doesnt sound like a bad idea to gain some HP.

Bryan said he had a shop do it, apparently there was abit of modifications necessary to get them to work. I have been looking for a set, not high on the list again.

I need to get ahold of the specs on the 300zx cams, or just get a hold of them period and fit them in my spare engine. I am not sure if the journal sizes are the same or not.

Matt-I dont really see any benefits from a performance standpoint from doing this unless there is untapped power above the 20* the VTC's offer (I forget the exact specs, IIRC it is either -5,0, or 5*). If there is untapped power there I could see that helping you on track days and such, but I dont think it would be worth it since it would be a PITA to adjust them (unless maybe you adjusted them just pulling the side cover off (which I dont know if thats possiable or not yet, room wise)).

If they are $20 I'm in

just lay a bead on the top of each cam lobe and grind it down a bit. They are rollers so it being too steep wont be a problem
