regular, mid or premium?

I have a 91 SE auto with ~129000 miles on it. I have been told to run atleast mid grade in my car because it is an older car. I normaly run regular because it gives me the most power. I live in UT at an elevation of 4500 ft and when I go from regular to mid grade I notice a loss in power. When I go back to the regular, the power comes back. I have my timing set between 20 and 25. What gives? Shouldn't a higher octane give me more power?

common misconception the lower the octane the easier it burns and the more power it makes.
The VE runs premium because of it's higher compression ratio, which can cause detonation.

I usually put in midgrade, but with these gas prices I'm running a mix of 89 and 87.

I havnt had over 1/3 of a tank in weeks.

should I worry about detonation with the VG engine if I run regular?

I run super in my VG to aviod any carbon deposits. Seems to run real smooth too. When I run regular it sounds rough.

I personally run premium (93 Octane) in my car. Couldn't tell you how she runs on 89 because I have never put anything besides 93 in it.

I just blasted a hole in the sub-stratosphere between Houston and Omaha in my newly acquired 1990 Max....Filled in Houston,
8 gallons in some little place just south of Sherman, and 14.8 in Overland park. Got home with just over half tank left and when filled up today, seems I got somewhere just north of 27 mpg averaging 76.77 mph (thats 998 miles and 13 hours FLAT including fuel stops). Escort sure makes a good radar detector....

I use 92 octane on my se thats running well and for the other one i use 87 octane because its having so much problem. More like because I don't drive it around anymore. But the price of gas is starting to get expense here. At 2.51 per gallon for 92 and 2.27 for 87
