92 GXE broken speedometer

I own a 92 GXE. I noticed today that my speedometer is not working. It was working this morning as I ran an errand. When I got back in my car and started to drive I noticed that the needle didn't move and stayed at the 0 mph mark. The tachometer is working.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this and could recommend some troubleshooting tips or a solution. I'm nervous that, like all the other repairs to my Maxima, this could be expensive.

thanks in advance,

John

Thanks so much for responding!

It is an automatic. The odometer isn't working and neither is the cruise control. The gas guage, tachometer, temp guage are working. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there's any more info you need.

thanks,

John

go to junkyard and get a replacement. Easiest way but your mileage will be off.

What are you referring to that I should replace?

it could be the vechical speed sensor (in the tranny)

if it is actually the gauges I have a set of GXE gauges I'll sell cheap

vehicle speed sensor located in the transmission. there should be a harness going to the tranny with a 10mm bolt holding it in. sometimes the harness is faulty and not the sensor....or the gear inside could be stripped. good luck.

try the speed sensor it's not your gauge. find the speed sensor and hit the top of it with a rubber hammer or even a hammer will work thart is what i did and it worked right away but you have to hit it to get the rubber top smooth w/ the sides.

Can you give me a little better discription of the location of the speed sensor, or is there an online resource? I have a Chiltons but its not much help. Thanks for the replies!

I have an auto GXE 89 with the same problem. My spedometer and milage don't work. Some times it will come on but it's real jumpy. Any suggestions?

Go back and read through some previous pages of threads. I had the same problem and we discussed this at length in a previous post. It will give you all the info you need. You can do the "poor man's search" on google to find it.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=XX...rums.maxima.org

Where I put hte X's(in the address bar) you put whatever you want to search.Though it does not search as good the forums' way, it still works for general questions.

I borrowed this from another post...

Do you have any quick links to these threads? Unfortunately the search feature isn't currently working in these forums. I did a search on Google using the phrase "broken speedometer" and Maxima but it didn't come up with any threads on this forum.

thanks,

John

quazi, that's what mine did a couple of weeks before completely failing.

i still haven't figured out my problem although i think it's the wiring harness but still could be the plastic gear. another thing you can do is to check the continuity at various places. that should tell you if the harness is messed up.

this was the picture that was missing from the previous thread. i had removed it from my cardomain site. in the picture, to the right is the firewall.

Well -- I fixed the problem, although I'm not sure I could do it again. I printed out the photo of the sensor (thanks, by the way!) and went to my car and tried to find it. I stuck my hand down there, moved some wires, pushed on a rubber cap about the size of a quarter and didn't really see what I thought was the sensor. I figured I'd come back, jack the car up and take a look from beneath. Anyway, I had to run a errand and when I drove off the speedometer and tach were working again! Maybe I just have Fonzi-like powers.

Thanks for all the replies,

John

thank you everyone!

i got a '92 GXE with the same speedometer problem. followed the instructions here and viola, the thing works!! considering the number of people who've posted asking about the speedometer problem, maybe someone could make this thread a sticky? It's kind of annoying not being able to easily find a solution to a problem that "everyone" seems to know about (couldn't find the solution in FAQ either... google also turns up nothing). One comment I can add to the above, on the GXE automatic, there is no 10mm bolt next to the round quarter-size speed sensor connector... and the thing is right behind the oil filter. Just needs a small tap with a hammer and all's well. Wish all problems could be fixed like this with a hammer.
