Valve Adjustment???

I hope I don't get flamed for this but I can't seem to get the search function to work.....

A friend of mine with a 94 Maxima took it to a shop the other day, and the mechanic gave her a big scare about having the valves adjusted. Anyway she doesn't have the money right now and is all freaked out about it. What I am trying to find out is how important that is. Its been my experience that an overhead cam engine very seldom actually NEEDS a valve adjustment. What do you guys think?

It's a 94 v6 Maxima with around 110k on it.

Thanks in advance

we have hydraulic lifters so there is no way to adjust the valvetrain at all (unless they somehow got extremely worn down and you just need new ones which probably isn't the case).

Is her Max a GXE or SE? if it has the SOHC engine(VG), it's a GXE. If it has the DOHC(VE), it's an SE. having said that, if she has an SE it's probably the VTC's. Read the FAQ's and check out Craig Brace's site to learn how to ground them out.usually that will quiet them, even though she will lose a small amount of power. Cheers!

She lives in Colorado, and I live in AZ, so would it do any damage to the engine to drive it with the VTC's messed up? I'm not planning on being within 500 miles of the car anytime soon.

Thanks guys.

If she's not scared to touch the engine she can ground the VTc's so they won't tick again. directions are on www.geocities.com/craigbrace. Follow the how to link.
