Clutch Tranny Quandries

Ok, i was reading through the faqs and i came across the write up matt had on clutch replacement. now im pretty sure my cluth is gone, but im a lil suspicious of my tanny. on the write up matt says if you take the clutch off and you spin the shaft and hear marbles then the bearings are bad. so here is the thing.

say my car is in neutral (5speed tranny) as long as my foot is on the clutch i hear nothing, but when i let go i hear marbles. sometimes even if the clutch is down i hear a very faint marble sound, but not often. so im wondering. when my car is in neutral the shaft isnt engaged so the sound im hearing isnt from the tranny is it? wouldnt this be my throw out bearings or pieces of my punished clutch making the noises?

if it makes the noise with the clutch pushed in then its your throw out bearing

if it make the noise with the clutch released then its your input shaft bearings

if it makes noise no matter what then its probobly both

Hmmm, mine did the same thing before it starting sounding like metal scraping against metal and then I replaced the tranny. But the used tranny I put it makes the same sound, but real faint. How long do you think it will hold up?

well to completly rebiuld one is not easy at all but to just replace the input shaft bearings would not be to bad but you still need a few special tools to do it and a FSM is a MUST!!! unless youve done it on other FWD MT trannys because there all simaler
