transmisson fluid

how often should you change you transmisson fluid??

And when changing the transmisson fluid do you just get it drained and refilled or do you get it flush??

I've read not to get it flushed if you have high miles because it will break up all the dirt and stuff in there which can cause leaks and greatly shorten the life of the transmission.

I've also read here about members who got 200k+ miles without ever changing the tranny fluid. On the other hand, I've also read countless posts about transmissions slipping, breaking down, etc... Guess it all depends on how rough you drive it.

But anyway, I think it's ok to just drain and fill the fluid. You will need to do this multiple times though, perhaps like once a week because when you just drain the fluid there is still a lot of old fluid sitting in the tranny.

Also remember when refilling to pour in the same amount of tranny fluid that drained out.

I would suggest once a year. It's only about 3-1/2 qts. I would add only 3-qts and check the level hot and add as needed. A cold reading isn't accurate. I disagree with jaguax to a certain degree. I've read about most max's our age having to get rebuilt trans. I'm one of them. Problem is the rebuild is not as good as original. If you research this forum you'll see the best thing you can do is add a trans cooler. They're only about $35 and certainly worth it. The trans seems to be the weak part of this great car. I have a '90 that I just spent $1,500 to rebuild the trans. I also bought my son a '93. The first thing I did with the '93 is add a trans cooler. It's a real easy job.

What are you disagreeing with?

I didn't mean to change the tranny fluid once a week for the rest of the life of the car.

I was talking about replacing ALL of the tranny fluid. When you just drain the tranny fluid once and refill you are only getting a low percentage of the old fluid out. A lot of the old fluid will still remain in the transmission after draining just once. So what I was saying was, drain it once a week for only a couple of weeks, because as you drive you will be mixing the old fluid with the new and after a few drains and refills you will be dumping out more and more old fluid until it is refilled with almost all new.

Sorry for the misunderstanding

To tell you the truth my old tranny went 229k miles without a flush or oil change. I just had it replaced because it was slipping hard. The best mods you can do to emsure a long life for your tranny are a tranny cooler and VB mod.

PS - If you are experiencing no problem with your tranny leave it alone unless you're modding it.
