Auto Tranny question....

.. this is defiantley a Noobie question, but here goes. I`m not really familiar with front wheel drives, so I have now idea on this. Does this tranny have a filter, and if so, is it hard to replace ? The car has 136K on it, and I would imagine that it has never been changed. Also, it is best just to drain and refill, or have it flushed ? I`ve heard the horror stories on flushing tranny`s, so please spaek from personal experience, and not what you heard.

Thanks

Oh, its a 92 SE.

You could change the filter yourself by removing the pan and there is a filter inside there. Pull it out, replace it and you are done. Don't forget to fill it back up and check the oil when the engine is running. Put enough trans fluid to get some showing on the dipstick though before you crank it up. I don't flush my transmissions, but thats just me. Sometimes I'll flush the lines if I'm putting in a new transmission. Kinda dumb to spend a bunch of money on a new one and then suck metal into it from the lines.

Put it like this I flushed my tranny last summer. I just got a new tranny installed last week. What I learned is that a few months after the flush my tranny did a Saddam on me and went straight down the hole.

no replaceable filter, unless you want to R&R the trans.
trnny flushs are bad news IMHO (and experiance too)

Ok, so which is it ? Internetautomar says there`s no filter without R&Ring tranny. KmanCA says remove the pan and the filter is there ???

Would I be better off just draining the tranny and refilling ?

Both, depends on the trans in the car.
I'm so used to it being the VG people asking that I automatically say no filter w/o dissassembly.
the RE4F04A/V HAS A FILTER
but the RL4FO2A doesn't have an easily replacable one.

Thank you. Now, how hard is it too change the filter ? I`ve messed with all the 700R4` and AOD`s you`d ever want to see, but never a front driver. Is it basicly the same setup, only turned sideways ?

normally, the pan is on the bottom with the filter, on most trannies, exclusions being the saturn and saab trannies they use a spin on oil filter.
Best trans filter design IMHO
