Tranny is dead, now what?

Well, my tranny died on my 94 gxe and I have decided to get a 4th gen, I'm just not sure how to get rid of my current one. I can get it all fixed up (new tranny and other cosmetic issues) for around $1200-$1300. At that point I would either try to sell it to a private party or trade it in. My second option would be to part it out and just try to get what I can for the random parts.

My concern about fixing it up is that it has 172,XXX miles on it and might not be that great of a seller. Would that $12-$1300 be better put towards the down payment on a 4th gen?

Would I be losing out on a large sum of money by just parting it out, rather than fixing it?

Any ideas, opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Mike

If the car is in decent shape overall (other than the transmission), I'd say fix the transmission and sell it (or keep on driving it). Yearwise, you have the newest 3rd gen and I'd imagine you'd at least quite a bit more than the cost of the transmission repair.

Part it out, you'd be amazed at the value of a parted out car.

Where do you stand on other repairs? If you have 172K will you need a 60k at 180K? Has the car had tons of maint. over the years or are alot of things coming due? How long would you want to keep it if you get it fixed? I guess 1400 to repair it would be ok if you wanted to keep it at least 2-3 years, and if you had already spent alot on repairs along the way on parts that wear-brakes, suspension, etc. I don't think I'd repair the transmission just to sell it. Around here there had been some 120K maximas selling in the 2500 range-maybe they aren't the best condition, but it does lower other maximas value. If in your area maximas go for 3-4 grand, then maybe it would be worth fixing. How much newer of 4th gen are you thinking about? When I looked the cheapest 95s were at least 3800 with 120K for the most part. The best values were probably the 97-98 gxes with 60-70K for 7-8000. But I figure the older 95s will have the suspension repair needs, waterpumps, cam and crank position sensors, etc. to deal with.

The car has been fairly well maintained. It was in an accident from the previous owner so the front is kind of messed up. It would need at least one new tire. A salesman at a dealership I went to yesterday said something about new timing chains too?

At the moment I'm leaning towards parts. Thanks for all your help!
