Car won't start (Changed valve cover gasket)

I recently changed my front valve cover gasket. After reassembling the car it doesn't start. It turns over but only occasional misfires not even close to starting.

I removed the distributor to get access to the valve cover. I reset the timing according to the chilton's manual but no change. Definitely have spark and fuel as I smell unburned gas in the exhaust.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
