whats's this Variable Intake manifold used on the VE30DE 5spd all about?

whats's this Variable Intake manifold used on the VE30DE 5spd all about?

I saw this mod on Aaron92se's webpage; how much performance can you gain from this "manifold"? I thought all VE intake manifolds were the same.

It basically has two sets of paths the air can take -- long and short. There's a power valve that moves a plate that switches between the two. At low RPMS, the air takes the longer path (correct me if I'm wrong) and at higher RPMS it takes the shorter path.


I have a spare complete VE VI manifold that I'm going to play with this summer

Are you expecting a noticeable gain or just a minor gain vs. the fact that you can pick up a 5spd VE manifold for a fairly decent price?
And is the 5 spd. manifold a direct replacement for the Auto. manifold or is modification required?

I already have a VI intake on my car. I picked up this spare one because it was $3 on Ebay and came with a throttle body, power valve, EGR valve and EGR and power valve solenoids on it. By "play" I mean I am probably going to bore my throttle body and match the opening of the manifold to it. I might also have the whole thing powdercoated. This way I'll have no extra downtime on the car while these things are being done to it.


As for modification, you need to rig up an RPM switch to actuate the power valve because I don't think auto ECU's can do it. The 5-speed ECU activates the VI based upon RPM, load and coolant temp inputs.

Nice find on that Mizeree...$3 wow.

Yeah, MrGone and I swapped in his spare AT ECU in my car and it doesn't activate the VI. You have to really pay attention to tell the difference, but it probably does show up on a dyno. In his car, he has (had? don't know if he still does) an LED to indicate when the VI is in use. It's pretty cool and helpful in seeing how the set up works and at what throttle response and rpm, etc.

i just put a newer auto ve in my 5-sp im still runnin the auto manifold cause i had a friend help rip out the old motor and we kind of forgot where a switch and a couple of vacume lines go so i have to figure out all that before i put the vi back on but since its of in going to polish it. i really need to find someone in the central florida area that has a ve 5-speed and would let me take a peak at it

also the VI is mainly load based, not really rpm based, meh. IMHO, its not a big deal.

mmmm............interesting. It seems as though this is not really that big of a mod and I think i'm better off just getting my intake manifold extrude honed by some guys out here in SoCal. Thanx for the imput guys. I just thought i was missing out on some big "VE" secret.

I didnt realize he was logged in on my computer, that was actually my post.

Basically the 2 'plenums' are the same length/volume/size. one feeds cylinders 1-3-5, the other feeds 2-4-6. The VI is about a 2x6" plate that basically is like a throttle body. When you mash on the gas, the solenoid lets vacuum pass and makes the actuator pull the plate flat, what gives you more torque. Aside from that it just stays up and its more for highend power/blah.


I have an idea for a intake manifold mod, I just need to actually sit down and do it. It's not exactly easy soooo

Hehe, I'm glad people are actually interested in my car.

AFAIK, no VE Auto has ever done this manifold swap. But, in all my research, it doesn't seem that hard. And as someone said earlier, it's load based. But that doesn't bother me at all since I am only concerned about when it opens at WOT only. So I will have mine setup with an RPM switch. But I will have a regular switch to activate manually for testing purposes until I get it working.

I can't see how this mod can possibly give you more than a tenth in the 1/4 mile. But who knows. I believe that the VE 5spd and auto top end is identical, but the variable intake of the 5spd might give them a low end power advantage. I mean, other than being a 5spd with better gearing, blah blah.

So, if someone has a VE 5spd intake manifold setup for sale, I am interested. I will also need all the bells and whistles to get this to work... solenoid, power valve actuator, power valve tank, etc.

I gotta check out my VE auto manifold again, you may or may not see a gain in the highend, or lowend. it really depends on the auto design.

The best way to find the switch over would be to do 2 dynos. 1 activated, one not, then find the cross over point and walla! (lol, but we've already talked about this hehehehe)

Haha, yeah. That is the way you find your optimal VTC release point. For those of you that can change it. lol Oh that's right, only I can. Also, that's how Hondas find the optimal release point with a VTEC controller.

As soon as I start getting dynos for free, that is when I will have my car up there finding out the stuff that is really insignificant.. like optimal variable intake point. Oh yeah, hopefully, I will have road dyno sometime in the future.
