Steering ratio adjustment

I found steering ratios for almost all other gens yet not ours..

6th gen 16.2
5th gen 16.6
4th gen 16.7
3rd gen ?
2nd gen 17.7
1st gen ?

They obviously progressed toward a lower ratio over time. The 3rd gen had probably around 17. Can this ratio be further adjusted on our cars? I don't feel that the steering response is quick enough. I'd like to try this option if feasible, maybe 14.

Thanks, that's a pretty high ratio. Gotta get me one of those not-so-cheap fsm's.

What's a reasonable price if I went to the shop?

I just made a lot of phone calls to see if anyone is willing to do this at all. Only one performance shop does. The problem is that in order to lower tha ratio, you need a completely different rack and pinion. Since the se model already has the best available for its year, and no aftermarket racks, the only other alternative would be a rack and pinion from the later models. For this, the shop owner said, you'd probably have to have the same unibody bolt pattern. After calling several nissan numbers, including dealers and nissan of north america, noone was able to tell me if the 3rd gen matches another generation. But they said most likely no. Having seen the ebay car with a possible 5th gen rack, it may be plausible.

Does anyone know how to take the play out of the steering wheel?

If you have play in the steering wheel, then you've probably got bad tie rod ends or ball joints.. or wheel bearings... or strut mounts....

if you don't know what you're doing with steering, I suggest taking it to a competent shop and let them diagnose it. otherwise, you can sit there for months and throw money at it (we're talking $1500 easy) and never fix the problem.

Yeah, that slight play that makes a huge difference is what I'm trying to get rid of. I had them check the entire front suspension (tie rods, ball joints, control arms etc.) and everything is tight. I can hear a little humming noise so it could be bearings, but I know from my previous experience that the noise will get worse if it's indeed them. I can mostly feel the play over potholes at high speeds, and that's why I think the struts themselves could be the culprit.

Matt, in my 92 FSM, I have 16.8. Plus, 16.8 sounds better than your number you probably just made up. LOL jk

Aaron, what steering system is listed up there at the top of the specs?
This one has PR26AC listed.
18.7:1 overall ratio
3.01 turns lock-lock

Mine says PR26SC.
16.8 overall ratio
3.01 lock to lock

I thought the 92 SE and 92 GXE had different steering. One takes like 2 turns of the steering wheel itself to go from end to end. And my SE does 1.5 turns. I wonder why you have a different steering type.
