like internetautomar said, it was an option for early GXEs only (not SEs) in the US. It was part of a package that also included digital climate control and sonar suspension I believe.
No, it's not an easy swap for other 3rd gens with analog gauges. Lots of wiring changes and a few other parts. It'd probably be doable but I dont think it's worth the effort. I've heard of people converting from digital to analog after the digital one died though.

not easily, you'd need most of the processor from the main digital dash to control it
You'd probably have better luck hooking up one from a 240. They seem to have a separate unit that controls it that you might be able to integrate our speed sensor into. But still it'd be a lot of work.

I dont have any of the parts that I'd need to mess around with to figure it out. And I dont really have the time right now to do this.
I've heard from a friend that you can check out FSMs from the public library so you may want to see if you can pick up a 240sx one (S13 model) and take a look at the wiring. It's not gonna be simple, but might be doable. Mechanically it's going to be a lot of work too since you'll probably have to take off the whole upper dash to cut and mount it properly.
