Help needed replacing CV joint boot / 91 SE

I need to replace the boot on my 91 Maxima SE CV joint, wheel side , right side of car. Im on a tight budget so I am not doing the whole axle. I have the shaft out of the wheel hub and now I'm stuck.

How do I remove the outer portion of the CV joint from the shaft? I know there is a retainer ring inside but how do I get the outermost portion off while the rest of the unit stays in the car?(tranny side still in place)

I also was going to pull the whole axle unit out ...is ther more than those 3-12 mm bolts holding that carrier in place? Once the bolts were out it wouldnt separate. Whats up

Any advice fellas?

that's all that holds it in place is the carrier bearing and those three bolts. try whacking that part with a hammer a few times and do what you can to separate it there. once you get it off, the whole thing will come out.. it's likely just frozen in there due to rust- especially if you're in NY.

get some pb blaster in there. hammer the axle side of the bracket so you get it to spin. once it starts spinning it'll come apart w/ a little prying.

Thanks fellas

Thanks for the reply on getting that carrier braket apart. I'll soak it in wd40 or something then take a whack at it.. But that was just to get it on the bench.

How do i take apart the outer cv joint , down to the axle, in order to get a fresh boot on it and repack it?

Cut the old boot off and you will see that the outer cv joint itself can be remove by tapping it off the axle with a heavy hammer. Try to be gentle about it.

Thanks & more

Thanks buddy.

I'll whack at it but does the cage & ball bearings come off with the outer joint assembly or should I just be whacking at the larger outside piece?

I see in the less than helpful Chiltons manual that they use a puller and also give no indication as to whether the cage & ***** come off with the outer joint assembly

Worked Like a Charm

One or two whacks and the unit was off. The job went smoothly from there on in thanks to your advice. I had more trouble crimping the boot clamps!

If anyone needs advice on Porsche 944 cars, I have had 14 years under the hood experience, also familiar with older Benz, Id be happy to foeld any questions.

Glad that the project went well. How are the 944 turbos to work on? Reliable at all?

944 is complicated

The 944 is great car, the turbo is fantastic, but they are costly and complicated to fix. I do my own wrenching and have had 3 normally aspirated models, one of which I tracked in the Porsche club racing /drivers ed events.

They are great from the factory but get expensive to add any additional horsepower. The turbo is fun but adds many hours in maintenance compared to the non turbo. You see, the germans do just about everthing a little different, and you need a slew of special tools.

These days, the resale can be cheap but an abused one can be a money pit. Are you looking to get into one?
