Uhhh, you can't pull the engine and tranny out from the top.. not enough room. If you don't separate them, you have to pull them out from the bottom.. It's not hard, just messy. jack the car up as high as you can, and you should have room.

well plus I had a second thought that maybe you pulled the tranny first and was too lazy to search for the pics, which could have resulted in my owning myself
You can pull both from the top but it's tight. But you aren't pulling a VE if you have a 91se. A VG might allow some more room. Thing is if it's tight, you end up banging on stuff to get it out.
If you jack up the car, you have to lift the front end really high. ie..maybe 3.5-4+ ft. And you have to drop the engine on some cardboard then slide it out. If you try to set the engine down on a dolly, you have to jack up the car even more.

I used a skateboard when i dropped the bad tranny outta my first truck..and only had it up maybe 2 feet in the air..course, that was in a mid 80s GMC and it was ONLY the tranny..so..your results may very..an old creeper or skateboard or somthing should be short enough and strong enough for a motor and trans out of a max..
Tried to go that way with a VG auto and it wouldn't fit. the total length was 1" wider than the frame rails.. of ocurse that's still with all the other crap in the engine bay. had I stripped it completely down, I might have been able to get it out. You also don't need the car 3.5 ft in the air either. a VE is 27.5" tall, which is taller than a VG. so there's less than 2.5 ft up that you need to get it out.

yeah, it's easier to just jack up the car, put it on some tall jackstands, wrap some chains around the exhaust manifolds, then drop the engine. it's only.. umm 6 or 7 bolts holding the engine and crossmember in. then you've of course got the wiring up top and the exhaust, but that's the hardest part.
it can be done Matt...i can show you.
you have to remove the crank pulley. the engine/tranny should be tilted. tranny should be lower. that should give you JUST enough room to pull the motor out w/ the tranny.

I guess you don't have to lift it up that much if you remove the x-member. But then you have to drop it down on the oil pan.

just used one this weekend to pull redmax's VQ, finally no more "drop the motor...readjust...lift"(repeat 3-4 times)
