Bose radio/speaker problems
Hey everyone, im new to the board but it looks great!!!
I have an 89 max with the bose system (cassette). But even with the volume all the way up, i barely hear anything. i do get some sound so i know im getting a signal. so the speakers must be working. and i know that they each have their own amp, so i think its unlikely that they would all go. But just to be sure i replaced the front speakers for some from the junk yard. but that didnt help anyhtin. sometimes when i m,ake ashort stop, i get some normal sound for a second.
So i think im left with two possibilities, to replace the bose head unit, or start searching for a short. If anyone has some useful info i would be a great help!!!

replace the HU and the speakers and it'll all work and you'll be happy and it'll probably be cheaper than trying to fix all the broken parts.

Hes right, get a good pioneer or kenwood or alpine h/u, a 50' roll of 16 ga speaker wire, and some good 4" and 6x9s (again, basically ANYTHING but sony..) and spend an afternoon switching them and you wont be out NEARLY as much time and money..pm me or ask on the audio forum if you have any questions..

you will however be limited to the sound you can put through them because they are small and not designed for big power.
you can find a non-bose car and swipe it's 4x6 pods for the front so that you don't have to adapt anything up front.

Good answer, Golden Ice, except instead of getting 4" speakers for the front, I reccomend you buy some speaker pods from James92SE and put in some quality 6.5s.
That way, when you want to upgrade to seperates later on, most of the work is done for you.
The Bose stuff sounds pretty decent for a stock stereo (especially back in the late 80s-early 90s), but once it starts to go, it really isn't worth salvaging, IMO.

I suggested the 4" so he wouldn't have to change the pods..I havent even changed my non bose pods to 6.5"..mostly because I'm too lazy to just go make them, and I try to avoid buying things I can make easily at all costs..

Your weak Bose system
Bose engineered a great sound system for our cars, that started to deteriorate after 6 years due to faulty electrolytic capacitors. If you still have all your Bose components, they can be repaired. There are 3 main parts to that system and a total of 5 parts that always need to be repaired. You have a Clarion Head Unit, 4 Bose Amplifiers (located at each speaker) and 4 Bose speakers. Of these, the head unit and 4 amplifiers always go bad and can be rebuilt to "better than new" condition. The rear Bose (1 ohm 6X9) speakers can be replaced . The front speakers rarely go bad. The sound system when working sounds great and supplies ample sound for the cars passengers. Once the amplifiers are rebuilt properly, they will never go bad again.
