auto trans questions
The automatic transmission on our 1990 GXE with 100,000 miles is not working anymore (engine dies when shifting to drive or reverse). The engine runs strong and we recently did an timing belt/water pump change.
Questions:
1. I can get a rebuild from a reputable shop with a 2 year warranty for $1700 or a junkyard trans of unknown mileage for $800 installed with a 60 day warranty. What alternative would you go with?
2. About how many hour swould it take to remove and install an automatic transmission?
3. Would this job require any special tools other than a floor jack and sockets/normal hand tools?

4-6 hours of labor..on an auto theirs alot more lines..it all depends ur budget..u stated that ur maint(belt,w.p.)were just done so ull drive alot longer.get the 1700 trans cause of warr.theirs shops that do a trans for 3-500..search around and good luck
The key IMO is "reputable shop" and "2 yr warranty". I spent $1800 on a rebuild (same car as yours) with a 12/12 warranty, and I have never really been happy with it. But if you know them and trust that the shop will take care of you and do it right, it's probably the best bet.
I personally would go with a used one IF I knew the mileage in it before hand.

i got a tranny rebuild on my 89 auto for 1375 from a pretty good shop and it has held up but i know 3 other people with maximas and 2 of them have had rebuilds and they both said the same thing as me it wasnt the same as before i dont think even the best tranny shops can make your car the same again because they probally dont use the same parts as factory but if you go with a good reputable shop youll be ok just remember it may not shift the same ever again this is just my experience im not sayin it is like this for everyone but just wanted to give you a heads up from some one who has also had it done.......
