checking a fuel injector
checking a fuel injector
Ever since my trip from Utah to Washingtonand back, my car has not run the same. I did a balance test on the cylinders today and when I pulled the spark plug wire off cylinder five's plug, it didn't seem to make any difference. I checked the spark and pulled the other plugs and they all seem the same. So is this a compression or injector problem??

you need to test it with a multimeter and find out the resistance of that injector. it's supposed to read 14ohms iirc
What do u mean by not running right? I think i was having an AAC adjustkment problem because of poor gas milege. And yes i changed my O2. which made a little change. Runs like crap still though.
the motor is definitely missing a little. Before the trip when I would have the car in neutral, I could give the throttle a good jolt and she'd wind up, but now when I do that, it stumbles then winds up a bit. does that make sense? I can't tell of any power loss because I got spoiled down at sea level in Wahington and am now back up at 4500 feet in Orem.
injector problems
I had a similar problem with my 89. It was bad injector
connectors. I could make it happen by bending on the wires
leading to the connector and then make it stop by additional
movement. The problem went away after replacing two of
them, but has returned.

if yours is a vg, all you have to do is unplug each injectors and probe each connector. you should be getting anywhere between 10-14 ohms. if not, then it's dead. If yes and you're still getting problems, then you could be having clogged injector, compression problem, worn piston seals, etc.... Also, check the engine to see if there were any cracks, sometime too much advanced timing and constant usage of low octane grade gasoline could caused these problems. Me personally, I think 15 degree adv timing by factory default is a little high for nissan to tell us it's alright to use regular. Maybe 10 degree sounds better for that type of cheap booze.
Injector...I'd almost guarantee it.
There's been a lot of discussion here about aftermarket vs. dealer parts, injectors included. They're damn expensive from the dealer, but they'll probably last longer. I bought one from Direct Auto (online) last year for $35.99 plus a $12 core. But, it is now leaking. Lifetime warranty, tho, but they'll probably make me send it in first- like that works.
Anyway, that's what I know about it. If anyone has any better places to get them, we're all ears (Internetautomart...??)

could be an injector leaking and causing the detonation, but that is fairly uncommon.
The new injectors from bosch are the same as the dealer ones.
They run about $100 ea. and as I've said before DON'T buy remans on the nissan injectors, they have a VERY high defect rate especially the 89-91 VG

Because they came with my new motor. I had a set that were also good in the old motor. I got them all cleaned up along with the TB, intake manifold, etc, before I got the new motor, so I used them. The crank on the old motor broke, right at the nose, so I lost the valves also.
I'm having very similar problems my 91 broke the crank at the snout and I dropped a 92 motor in and #6 injector as just peeing in the cylnder so I swapped the rail from the old motor now it mists but it loads at idel and gas fouls the plug while holding 173 on compression and has damn good spark
