how is EGR valve SUPPOSEd to work?
how is EGR valve SUPPOSEd to work?
on our cars? i cant seem to get mine to do anything, pushing it up doesnt do anything, taking the hose off it doesnt do anything, theres nothing coming from the hose, its hard to push up, and it doesnt seem to move on its own while im idling, even when i rev. is it supposed to do any of these things its not doing? someone told me its not supposed to do anything on a cold engine, that true? I think its staying open on idle, is that not right?
if its staying open at idle your car will run poorly/not at all.
try this, take a vacuum line with full vacuum and hook it up to the egr while your car is idling. It should just flat out die.

Turn the car on, and push the diaphram up. If the car sputters and dies, the EGR is working fine. If not, there is blockage somewhere. When you rev the engine at idle, the valve should open and then close. If you have a vacuum pump, attach it to the vacuum line and see if the diaphram opens.
By the way, I have a working EGR valve for sale if you need one
thx guys
my cars sputtering and dying at idle WITHOUT tampering with the EGR =P. Pushing it up seems to have no effect on the sputtering and dying that its already doing. giving it some throttle keeps it alive though. if its supposed to close during idle im almost certain somethings wrong with it though, seems to be staying open. i guess ill take it apart now and try cleaning it first.
