I finally got a VG turbo to mod instead of my VE!!

I've been thinking about getting a VG turbo for quite a while because of the fabrication involved in a turbo VE as well as the reliability issues. I figured a turbo VG in a 92 SE would be unique as well as fast; well, two weeks ago I got my turbo VG! No swapping involved though, I decided to just buy a 300zx. I ended up with an '88 300zx turbo 5spd with eibach's, tokico illumina's, a 3" catback exhaust with magnaflow muffler, and polyurathane bushings.

In response to what was said in this thread:
https://maxima.org/forums/showthread...=319365&page=2

Danny, Jeff92se, MrGone--yes I do have a turbo VG, no I'm not FOS, no I don't have pics because the "all-reliable" VG broke down in Iowa and never made it home, go figure I havn't been on the .org much because I was in Iowa trying to get my Z running, I only had access to dial-up. Didn't mean to decieve you guys, I was just messing with you and then my plan to post pics of my Z backfired when I couldn't get it back to Illinois.

I've whooped modded z31 turbo 5 speed's on the road and track many times. VE turbo is way cooler!

Sorry, I'm just messing with ya. Good job! A z31 turbo 5 speed is a sweet car.

--subs1000w-300 miles, but I already have a VE with similar mods to yours, but I'll get back to you on that.
--thumpyls-I havn't had much of a chance to compare the two, and I need to fix the Z and get it home first
--Aaron92SE-what was wrong with the modded z31 turbos you beat, were they autos?

I agree, a VE turbo would be cool but I'd rather put the same amount of work into a Z31. I like the looks, T-tops, handling, and most importantly the rear wheel drive. I'd rather put $2000 into my Z than put $2000 into my maxima to turbo it. I'm not bashing maxima's, I'm keeping mine, but the Z has much more potential for less work IMO.

edit: Irish and Subs-I need to get my car running right before I race anyone, and get a few mods thrown on it. I'm not too impressed with the stock acceleration of the Z, but I need to get this car back up to spec before I judge it. MrGone-RWD rocks!

Rosamax, I totally agree with you that the z31 has more potential than the Maxima for less money. I'm sorry if I came off as bashing your z31. I meant it's an AWESOME car. Good job!

There was nothing wrong with the modded Z31 turbo's I raced. Yes, they were 5 speeds with intake, exhaust, bov and MBC. I dunno what psi he was running, but he said he had those things. They run low 15s stock. With those mods, I can see him running mid 14s like me. It was a great race. The modded ones I raced at the track give me a run for my money from 0-30 (low part of 1st) and then from 50-65 (low part of 2nd), then I leave them every time they shift into the next gear. Those things have crazy amounts of low end power! VG power!

Jeff-nope, it's an 88, I think the anniversary ones were only 84's, too bad you're so far from Chicago or I'd come by and show it to you.
Aaron, I knew you were messing with me, no problem

I have an intercooler for it that I'll put in with some help from a fellow .org member and I've got a T3 turbo but I don't know if the T3 is worth messing with. The bov and boost controller will go on first.

DMad8724, it's near Cedar Rapids, but you wouldn't get too far in it without a distributor
DanNY, sorry it will be a few weeks before I can get it home to take pics internetautomart, you're right about the rust. It doesn't have any rust on it now because it's from Florida originally, and I'm going to park it during the winter so hopefully it won't be a problem, we need to meet sometime after I get it up here subs1000w, so are you talking about the udp, sts, and clutch?

I'll get pics of it as soon as I can, I admit that it's not much of a looker because of the color and the clearcoat is a little rough in areas, but I'm more concerned about performance. I guess it's kind of OT for the maxima forum but I'll keep you guys posted on it if you want me to, and I'll have a cameraphone in a week or two.

Depending on where in florida rust can still be a problem

True, luckily this car is rust-free, there's not even rust on the underside of the car. The first thing I had to do was change as many vacuum hoses as I could. I guess the combination of the Florida heat, age, and turbo heat really took its toll on all the plastic and rubber underneath the hood, so everything was really brittle.

Julio, I'd love to get a T3/T4 but it will probably have to wait for next year's income tax return unless you want to make a donation

Here is the ebay auction which includes a few pics of the exterior and interior. I paid more for the car than I wanted to, but like I said, the body is rust-free, the interior will be very good when I ditch those heavy Z seats, and the shocks, springs, exhaust, and bushings probably ran about $1500 including installation all done a year ago.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWN:IT

vwink182 and DMad8724, after I get it running I wouldn't mind meeting with you guys sometime, I have family in Marion/Cedar Rapids and I go back on weekends at least once per month.

the mod is not in my profile but it makes more power than all of those mods combined

im not bashing on the car it looks great in the pic and 2800 aint to bad of deal for it and im sure it will be alot of fun to drive considering its rwd but you gotta remember those only run mid 15's in the stock form and it dont sound like it has that much done besides 3in exhaust which although a very worthey mod on a turbo car may still not be able to break it into the 14's

I think I found your "secret" mod online:

http://store.yahoo.com/rodi/torfuelsav1.html

J/K, I'm really curious about what you're talking about though. I agree that the stock Z isn't much of a performer, and the only mods on mine are the ones the previous owner put on, so just the exhaust as far as power mods. The power it's putting down now isn't anything to brag about, but with an intercooler, BOV, boost controller, and possibly the T3 instead of the T25 if it makes a difference, I'm sure I'll be happy with it till I buy a bigger turbo. Now all I have to do is get this troublesome VG running right

I bet my Z is faster your Z... 135 hp of Geo crushing power...

Excelent choice! After doing some looking around if you are wanting a cheap replacement for the T25 or even the T3 turbos that came on the stock Z31 check out the 280ZX T3 turbo. I've been talking to some Z guys and apparently they are bigger than the turbo on the Z31's. I believe them too since there are some guys pushing some good power on the stock turbo. You'd have to double check to make sure it would bolt up but I'm pretty sure it would.

Good luck with the car and everything!

Hey cool, that Z was in KC. I'm about 2.5 hours from there. I wouldn't have bought it since I already have a Z but cool nonetheless, lol.
