Interior Swap...

I am in the process of working out buying a black interior (everything but the seats) from a fellow .org member...I could possibly be getting a pair of black leather seats from another .org member, too. I have a couple of questions for you guys that have done it...

What was the hardest part of the swap?
Can I swap the locks from my glovebox to the new one?
How do you remove the rear pillars with the seat belts that go through them?
Anyone know the exact number of interior pieces?

Also, I'm getting the seat belts too, but don't really like the orange part in the clip of it...has anyone/is it possible to dye these somehow? If anyone has pics of their swap that'd be awesome...

Here's some pics of what I might be buying:

And here's the 240sx wheel I'm going to be purchasing from a member from the NICO forums:

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the dash is the toughest part to do. Izzy or one of his buddies did the swap awhile ago. I don't see him on the forums anymore though.

Word on that 240sx wheel, I'm trying to get either at 240sx or 300zx wheel.

My relevant question is: What's the proper way to change out the steering wheels? Other than just pulling off the covers and changing them out...what are the tools used and such...I don't wanna go into this totally blind.

(To DMad8724) we both have 91 GXEs...and I think you'll agree, the only real interior flaw (other than cupholders), is that doofy wheel. It looks like a liver or something.

Yeah, except it looks more like the top view of a toilet since it's brown and has a ring around it. I'm pretty stoked that I'm still going to be able to use my cruise control, too.

I swapped my 89 interior into my current 92. You need to remove the headliner pieces to get the rear c-pillar out. those are held in by 3-5 clips just like the door panels. But you will have to undo the seat belt bolt under the rear seats to remove them.

The locks should be able to be moved...i thinik the glovebox comes apart.

MrGone has a steering wheel puller that makes it super easy (maybe less than 10 minutes total) and I think they are like $5-$10 at an autoparts store.

Be sure to have your current steering wheel/tires lined up perfectly straight, then put the new one on without turning the old one, that way it's on straight.

The only other advice I have is to pull the fuse for the horn before you replace the steering wheels. This is optional, but it's irritating to keep hitting the horn trying to put the new center piece back on the steering wheel.

I did the swap on my 92. The hardest part is probably the carpet because you have to pull everything up. Other than that the dash is the next hardest. Well actually not hard just time consuming.

Just take your time and you will be fine.

honk honk honk honk honk honk honk honk

x11dybillion

also with all the 3rd gen steering wheels i've messed with, you can probably get away without using a puller without a problem, but use shavedmax's tip and turn the bolt a couple threads so when your tugging and it comes loose you dont smack yourself in the face or something. Using the puller just makes it easier. Mines just a standard Grant universal puller I bought because I needed one to change the steering wheel on my Mustang.

I vote carpet aswell mainly because it's "heavy" and awkward, plus fitting it in around the ECU and all the other crap sucks but meh, it could be worse.

Dash took me a while the first time, but now I could do it pretty quickly/easily (Michael has said the same thing in the past.... a few times ).

Best tip i have is to put every thing in zip-locks and label them as you take them out....(screws) so then you dont lose them, and know where they go when you reinstall them.....

I pray to the Maxima gods that you're not implying that YOUR toilet is brown with a ring around it...
