I'm doing a complete rebuild it looks like. Doesn't really need it, runs great, but it's got 145,000 miles and I want it to be in tip top shape for Bristol this season. No one will tell me how much the Z swap is, so I guess I'll just drop about 3k into the one I've got. I'm talking JWT ecu, JWT cams, and complete tear down of what I've got. Won't cost 3k, but that's what I've got to put into it. So, anyone know of a good quality piston for the max or anything else I might need? I thought I had seen a rebuild kit for the VG engines somewhere? Matt, Skymax? Anyone?

I was using JE pistons (used for a 300ZX) and Crower connecting rods (also for a 300ZX). The pistons were $550 and the rods I got a deal for $480. I also had the JWT stage-II cams (paid $600 shipped).. I recommend getting stage-I. You will also need to replace the valves, valve springs, retainers, and you will want to port the heads as well while your at it.

That's the plan, going all the way! Are there any other pistons, I didnt' expect them to be so high!? My question is this: why stage I, I was looking at stage II or thinking it wouldn't be worth my time. The only "bolt on" I've NOT done is an underdrive pulley and headers, but I've got straight pipe (no converter or muffler). I'm also doing an JWT ecu during this same time. Reason for stage I?

Skymax, why do you recommend the JWT Stage 1 Cams? Do you like the Stage 2 Cams that you have?

Hmmm... well maybe you should get Stage-II Cams since your going all out especialy with higher compression pistons. Stage-II with stock internals isn't that impressive. I believe the stage-I cams would have gained more power in my current max since it's more street oriented.

Hmmm......

any of you guys know any good companies or websites out there that describe or give a good explanation of what goes into a "performance" engine rebuild. I've been contemplating on doubling up the work effort this summer in an attempt to get my car to where I would like it for next year! hopefully I can get the bolt-ons done by August and then the REAL work would start....any suggestions??

Give me a little time to find out what's going down with my car, and I may have an EXCELLENT condition VG for sale. one guy has already asked about it, but he may not need it. I'll post updates on my car search and engine availability soon.

that's fine with me man..
I "formally" requested that Jamie never make another 3rd Gen MOTM, because the only two have been totalled along the same times they were made MOTM.

strange coincidence, or the Maxima ***** out to get us?

Hmmm... maybe I should go back to my 3rd Gen MOTM site which I started a while ago.. actually I think it's been almost a year since I started that page.

At first I thought your max being totaled was an April Fool's joke (many people on the Altima board were doing the same thing).. but then I find out it's a reality. I don't blame you for writing to Jamie about the MOTM thing. Do you happen to get any pics of your wrecked car yet? I'd like to make a webpage dedicated to your max and/or make a wallpaper for your max.

I've been talking with Brian at Cattman performance and he still recommended the stage II. He mentioned some stock pistons but they are low compression he said. Would not having advanced timing compesate for the low compression piston or am I looking at it wrong. Does that mean that is how the piston performs or is how it is rated? Crower may be the way I'm going. Thanks Skymax, for the continuing information!
