hi new, and many problems... help!!

[FONT=Lucida Sans Unicode][COLOR=Black]Hello, I own a 91 nissan maxima. I have owned it for about a year. About a month after I bought it, it completly stalled out on me at a red light. I mean it wouldnt start for anything. The tow guy came, and jumped it and it started but after about a quarter of a mile of driving it did it again. We towed it back to my house. My dads friend looked at it and couldnt find anything wrong. My sister owns a 89 nissan so they inter changed parts to see if they could figure it out. I brought it to a machanic, and he had it for about three days and he couldnt figure it out either. When i got it back home, we tried a few expairments, we would hold down the gas and try to sart it, after doing this for a while, it would start! After it starts its fine and runs great. The car has done this a few more times after this first time. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I have replaced the air filters and a few more things i cant think of right now.
thnaks for any help!

Sounds from your description like the engine not having enough gas to start...I'm not an engine guy but that's just what it sounds like, assuming the engine needs gas to start, maybe a leak somewhere?

the last time my 91 max stalled out on me was when the alternator went dead.. it was after i exited a freeway so my battery was pretty charged up. i got a friend's car to jump start it, and i was able to drive it back home. but after i turned off the engine, i'd have to jump start it again.

the mechanic charged an arm and a leg for fixing that alternator.. just the part itself they charged me like CDN$450. so fulla ****

There are a number of things I'd check:
Alternator (like MaxNub91 said..)
Battery
Fuel Filter
Timing (maybe - but it wouldn't hurt)

ok,,this guy is new here so we will need to know some stuff up front..eg. last tune up,timing belt,mileage..try checking the maf sensor located besides the intake filter box..its blk and has a clip behind it.if this is loose(clip)or the 2 clamps around it are leaking vacuum theirs ur problem.often at times they come loose when other people inspect or replace the air filter improperly.basically,if u could spind ur maf then its loose.check ur gas filter for corrosion and for the price of a couple of dollars its good to replace.while replacing the filter try to borrow or rent a gas psi gauge(not sure the name of the gauge but it will help)this gauge lets u know the psi and continuity of the fuel's pressure that coming from the fuel pump..that could be y ur flooring the car for fuel.ur cars fuel injected and should not need to be floored prev. to starting.turn the key half way(dont start)u should hear the fuel pump coming on.u will have to hear a noise coming from their thats pretty obvious.as a tech myself, get a volt meter and check the wattage on the cars battery on and off.it be ur distributor getting ready to die out.hope this helps out, and repost any q's u have

FYI: if you mess around with the alternator, it is imperative that you disconnect your NEGATIVE battery terminal first. I learned my lesson thru the hard way. I was lucky enough that my Bosch alternator died in a parking lot, if I was on the road that would've been a terrible tragic. Please don't make the same mistake.
