KYB vs. Tokico

I'm getting a headache trying to search through the forum. I'm sorry, but I'm starting a new thread.

I'm going to change out the suspension on my SE. Getting a urethane kit, eibach 1.2 drop springs. But I'm having a time deciding on struts. There's a few other maximas around town, but only 1 other that did any upgrades. And he moved away couple of months back.

My question is, does anyone run with KYB or Tokico, and any good or bad things that have come up.

I'm open to all suggestions on this. And all criticism LOL. Ride quality is of moderate importance. I don't want a major stiff ride. Wife uses the car to run around. Thnx ahead for the info.

I've been leaning towards Tokico, but I didn't want to rule out anything.

Say for example: KYB had a bumpy ride, but good cornering. And that Tokico was just the opposite.

And the only way to find out is from first hand experience. And I'm sure there's enough people here with experience with all kinds of aftermarket struts.

I have Tokico blues and Eibach pro kit on my 2000 Celica GTS, and I love the ride. From what I have heard, the blues are a bit harsher than the kybs, but I think it is worth it. Great dampening, awesome handling. I wouldn't hesitate to do the combo again on my maxima.

I've got KYB's on my ride & I think they feel pretty good myself. All my friends say my ride feels real nice to sit in. I can't complain!!!

from someone that's done both, i'd go with the kybs...maybe both cars are just too different in handling characteristics (had kybs + eibach on 91se; tokico blues + eibach on 94se) I'd take the Kybs over the toks. If I want an actual upgrade performance wise, I'll go with konis..but the time isn't right.

maybe a myth, but i have read reviews of KYB's (adjustables) and some have said the adjustable thing
is not as strong as non-adj. but what do i know. i've never used kyb. i have tokico blues.

both mfgs have lifetime warranties. so keep your receipts. and do not tell the sales guy at the place you bought them from that you lowered your car when the struts fail. and they will fail relatively soon compared to stock. both brands.

I read alot of reviews before i got my kyb's. I didn't find many negative. But for the tokico I found alot of claims of the rears blowing after a year, and worse in hondas. I like my KYB's.

i read the honda thing, too, about tokico. lots of blow outs. don't know why. maybe because eventhough the honda is lighter, it bounces around severely.

i think the struts' lifespan depends on how you drive and what you drive over. i get the feeling, too, that all brands for the 3rd gen, which is not a lot, all suck at the same level pretty much. the most negative reviews i saw, however, were for the tokicos. i think those suck the most. i read, as well, that nissan uses those as stock on maximas. or they did. so you're not really upgrading when you go with those.

i may have been in error about kyb's. i may have been thinking of koni's. i think koni is adjustable. i think, too, that the struts are overstated. i think the springs determine more of the feel, stiff or soft, than the struts. i know it is both, of course, but spring rate determines a lot of the feel.

yea, but the spring rate is gonna determine the strength/quality of the struts you should get....for example, if you get eibachs, which are pretty stiff, you'd wanna get tokico's because they are a stronger strut......of course the drop always figures in

i wonder why, then, that most reviews for tokico blues were awful compared to the others. maybe it is because people are using the wrong kind of springs for them. or maybe people just have their heads up thier a$$. i have blues and they are ok. i've already gone through a set in about 18 months. and it mad me angry. but i hit some gnarly holes here in the LA streets. i saved the receipt this time. lifetime warranty. i ain't buying shocks ever again.

Well aparently that's all I'm going to get. I'm still kinda in the same place I was before. But atleast this time I have info to compare, instead of just prices. Thanks for all your help everyone.

i have ST with Tokicos. they're fine. ST is almost like stock, though. keep your receipts. if you go to the sites of these companies, they all have a disclaimer about lowering the cars, ie, none of them recommend doing it. and it voids the warranty instantly. but everyone does. and you don't have to tell the sales guy you lowered the car when you bring in your wasted struts in 18 months.
