Looking for info - wife bought a 1994 Maxima with out me

Hey guys - I am looking for some help. I really Appreciate any help this board can give me.

Some background on me - I am a FORD guy - I own a 1990 Supercharged Saleen Mustang - 501RWHP 11.8@120 on DR's/Stock 5 speed/No power shift
2002 WRX - 5speed, WRB, Waggon - daily driver

Well the wife needed a car - A used car for about 1/2 a year untill we start looking for a new car for her
We have a 8 month old son - so the car had to be safe and relyable

She when out on her own and found a 1994 Maxima that she really liked - so she bought it

http://www.showauto.com/viewfull.asp?ID=1021950

Is a 1994

I have no idea what trim level it is - check the add for more info

The car is great - clean - some rust over the pass side rear 1/4 but everything works and it drives great!!

the only problem i have discoverd is that the breaks squeal really bad when stopping under 20mph - over that there is no noise - also in reverse there is not any noise

I am looking for info about this car, the break squeal and basicly any links or info I can get about recalls, carfax, problems, so on

I am a newbi to this car make - but need to get as much info as possable as my son will be in this car and i want to make sure I have covered all possable problems/issues

Thanks guys for dealing with a FORD guy newbi!!!!!!!!!!

Well we forgive you. LOL

That's alright, I like Saleens. But anyway, the easy way to tell the model is by the taillights. GXE has a clear style lens, SE has a Black tint style lens.

For the brakes, A possible build up of brake dust. Or the pads are getting low. I haven't dealt to much with 94 models. As for links, check the stickys.

This car is very reliable. Here's a description on my reliable max. 230k miles and still counting. Tranny begun slipping at 228k miles but it has been replaced. These GXE auto trannies are not the best but can get the job done with the right mods. Don't worry about the brakes too much. You can do two things. Clean the car and pay special attention to the brakes or just buy some brake silencer if pads aren't needed. When my pads were low they didn't squeak though. I just had to press the brakes hard to slow down to a stop. For your wife to go out and buy a car without informing you I think that you should make her give you the keys to the max then feel some untouched Nissan. Welcome to the org and I think that you and you son will enjoy the car more than your wife. Read the stickies and if you want to spice up your max check out other peoples maxima's at cardomain.com look for the 89-94 models. Your wife deserves a beer for her excellent choice.

For the brakes, the previous owner might have put on cheap brake pads. If that's the case, new rotors aren't far off.

A lesson that I knew better from the beginning but made a major brain fart. The cheap brake pads I got started tearing up my rotor, leaving ruts all over it. Of course, instead of replacing with a stock rotor. I got oem size brembo slots. Still have some noise from the pads. But it sure does stop faster.
And so far no damage to the new rotors.

And to help you out a little, when I changed to the cheap pads. My car started to sound like a dump truck stopping. A metal to metal type of noise. If that's your case, someone might have put a cheap set on your car. So have the rotor checked out. It should show some signs if it's a cheap brake pad.

Thanks SO much for the info you provided

I am going to remove the tires and check the pads this weekend

LOL - wife got a glass of wine - not a beer!!

I am guessing its a SE?? but i am still not sure as the tail lights have both tinted lenses and clear

I have check the stickies and there is GREAT info there - I just dont know how to apply that to this car - as I really have no idea what model it is - IE the recall that is posted about rust and the North East, so on

I have just gotten back from my first look over of the car - ITS A GREAT CAR - dam the climaxiams are good - dam car drives better then my WRX

But i noticed that the car has the break squeal bad under 20 MPH - and it has keyless entry/secuity

I HAVE no idea how to access this feature - the owners manaul (which looks brand new) says - Digital touch entry system - contact NISSAN for the FIXED NUMBER PLATE - then you can change your personal CODE NUMBER

Is Nissan still supporting 94 FIXED NUMBER PLATE id's and how much will it cost to get it? Is there a way to reset the personal code # with out contacing nissan???

what was she doing out of the kitchen?!?!

Looks like you got a nice car - it's a GXE so 160hp. Might be a little slower than the Mustang in the 1/4 but pretty close.
As for the brake squel, just check the pads and the shims on them. Nothing tricky about the brakes. You have drums in back (unless the car has ABS; SEs come stock with 4 wheel disc but GXEs usually have drums in back)

welcome and check out the sticky posts at top for a list of common problems and useful websites and stuff

keyless entry - check out this page
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/454290/7
you should be able to figure out the number and reprogram it yourself

the owner's manual will tell you all you need to know about the alarm

at least you admit who's in charge

As already been stated, VERY reliable car. Only thing I have had to do was pads and rotors, and replace the trans after 230k...it got really slippy till it would warm up. Otherwise, rock solid and awsome reliability.

for the model its simple..se white dash..gxe blk..key codes on doors..gxe definitely..i agree with the brakes being low cost or they could be down to the wear indicator..replace and check the rotors..go with solid..be aware of the music system going out if its bose..

something doesn't add up......

IMHO its a very safe car

coincedence: today was the first time I drove by the scene of my accident with my black 3rd gen, I was 10 days away from 2 years of not going on that road. I didn't really have a choice though (work). Anywho, looking at how long it actually was, I just muttered a '**** how did I manage to walk out of that one'.

lol. Yeah, I wasn't looking forward to going by there, but hey, I did it at 25mph this time lol.

saleen90181, heres a pic
http://s92599732.onlinehome.us/image...3/photos/2.jpg
myself and 3 friends were all wearing our seatbelts. One kid had the wind knocked out of him, and there was some bruising from the seatbelts, but aside from that everyone walked away. Passenger compartment was undistorted (except the front passenger had to kick the door to get it to open).

There are other guys on here with far worse accidents (one got t-boned from a car at 60mph IIRC. It was horrible in the pics), but they've all be able to post about it.

Nothing a bit of paint, some bondo, and a sticker or two won't fix.

Welcome to the boards... watch out- these guys are post ****** and will f*** up just about every thread you post.

As has been said, you have a GXE (due to the keyless entry). look around on this forum and in the stickies for how to find the key code (under the dash on the pass side).

for the brakes, that's VERY common in the cars with drum brakes in the back. you can pull the shoes off, sand the glazed outer layer off, and have the drums turned... the noises will go away for a while, but they'll eventually come back if you ever have to stop hard. they have a horrible tendency to glaze over and squeal.

best way to fix it? switch to discs in the rear. it could probably use new struts, and you can pick up a set of rear struts w/ disc brakes on them for $2-300 froma junkyard. it's about a 3-4 hour job. much better than listening to squealing brakes all the time!

The last time i had an accident in my max i flew over the curb and into a ditch because i was being a cheap bum by not replacing the worn out tires. And it was rainy season here in vancouver.. It took CDN$2300 to fix the car. =(

But i remember when i slipped and swinged around then flew over into the ditch, i didn't even feel anything broke... then i got out the car and looked, the rear right wheel got smacked off from the curb, and the control arms snapped it's mount off, the strut had it's bottom part ripped off and gook was leaking out of it.. the chasis was kinda distorted from the force, but i never felt a single bit of it...

so this car is really quite safe compared to a lot of other cars..

I'm glad some of you guys are remembering my keyless entry write-up, if this isn't in the stickies yet will someone put it there?

Also, congrats on the max (gxe's rule!)

you could just do a 5 spd swap into GXE.
