Changing timing belt

I have a 92 Max GXE with 60,500 miles. I want to change the
timing belt, but am hesitant because I have read that if a belt tensioner is too tight, it can damage the crank and if too loose, it can cause other problems. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you....Brian.
