Maxima Exhaust

I am in the market for an exhaust, and would like to hear some different setups people have. I already have a WSP Y-pipe coming, and would like to hear what different cat-backs sound like. I was thinking of just getting a 2.5" Carsound cat and custom piping back to a Magnaflow muffler. This seems the most free-flowing. But sound is very important to me, and I would like to know what Max's sound like with aftermarket mufflers. So, please, anybody with experience here share with me, whether it be words or sound clips. Thank you!

i have a magnaflow...and it's by no means quiet. it drones below 2500 rpm with nice little burble when idle. even with the baffle in place, it still drones...but i personally like that sound. if you don't like loud exhaust, don't get a straight through muffler.

I have a vid clip of mine, but having problems getting it on the net.

I have 2 1/2" piping from the cat to a Ravin Muffler. Has kind of a rumble at idle, and a sweet sound that's hard to describe around 2000 rpm. It drowns out about 3200 though, which makes it great for when traveling on the interstate.

real ****ty video

Here's a few real ****ty videos of my exhaust, which sounds way better in person. this camera phone sucks for video thats for sure. anyway i have pacesetter headers, stock cat, and a straight through muffler. at idle, it has a meaner-than-stock growl. between 1000 and 2500 it has a real deep drone, harder the gas the deeper. higher rpms sound like stock when you foots barely touching the gas, floor it and it roars.

. I have a WSP Y, WSP B, and Maganflow. It sounds great, but is a little too loud for my tastes. Maybe just putting a magnaflow on a stock b-pipe will make it quieter (better resonator?). Or, if you get a WSP B-pipe, get the biggest resonator you can.

I have a Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 Series. I love the way it sounds. I have a WSP Y-pipe, a cleaned out cat, and 2 1/4" b-pipe w/ resonator. It sounds nice and rumbly at idle, deep around 2000-2750, and roars a little from 3000-5000. After 5000 OMG!!!! It sounds sick (and yes i meant that in a good way).

I wish it was alot easier to post sound files on here. I'd love to hear what a WSP Y-pipe does to the sound. And plus, no one up here has done anything to their Maxima. I'd love to hear what some sound like with diff exhausts.

For the Magnaflow guys, do you have a resonator on the piping as well, or did you just do straight piping? Has anybody here put a resonator on 2.5" piping?

On a stock exhuast, that resonator is about 2.5". So everyone propably did like I hade done and had it piped 2.5" all the way from the cat to the muffler. Because to put a resonator on 2.5" you'd almost have to have 3" pipe under there to act as a resonator. And with that big of a pipe, it might slow the flow rate coming out. The exhaust gas will hit that 3" and slow down some as it expands out. Then it relies on the momentum and other exhaust gases coming in to force it out.

Now what's funny, if you ever look in a chiltons. They list that resonator as a muffler in the diagram.

i have a brullen exhaust setup. you guys may not be too familiar with their products but they're a very popular exhaust manufacturer in canada. they do a lot of setups for exotics and german cars. they also fabricate intake, turbo and intercooler piping
anyways,
i have a 2.5" y-pipe, 2.5" high flow catt, 2.5" resonated b-pipe and a 2.5" straight thru muffler with a 3.5" resonated tip.
it sounds really awesome. has a low rumble to it. i've heard 3rd gens with flowmaster, greddy, remus and brullen mufflers. imo the brullen sounds the absolute best. although i am a tad biased

I noticed a decent gain in power from the exhaust system in the mid range of our powerband. i wish i had done each component seperately so that i could tell the individual difference to each piece but sometimes it's hard to get things done one at a time.

if i could do the whole thing over again, i'd go with 2.25" piping the whole way. the 2.5" tends to take away a noticeable bit of low end grunt.

I have a WSP y-pipe(2.5"),Magnaflow cat(2.5"), WSP b-pipe(2.5" with a 22" resonator), and Magnaflow 14618 muffler (2.25"inlet/3.5"dual tipped outletsz). The start up and idle sounds so SICK!!. Through low and mid it sounds real good. Low tone with a nice rumble to it but if you gun the accelerator you WILL set off car alarms. Sounds better than any fart can integra or civic !!

The Greddy catback is by far the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard. Mr. Gone has one and he's local to us. Him Issaquah. Me Bellevue. You Seattle.

He doesn't have a Y but I can't imagine it getting too much louder. It's a 2.25" setup though

So does a Magnaflow muffler withouth resonator sound raspy or cheap? Or is the tone good?

Any aftermarket muffler w/o a resonator is going to sound loud. ESPECIALLY if you ever plan on getting a Y pipe(one of the best performance items available for the max)

READ THE STICKIES. It's all in there. Bottom end. Make sure you car is good working order. ie.. 02 sensor, knock sensor, water temp sensor.

Best low end mod other than the Y was my JWT ecu.

Why would I want to change my low end? I have more than enough torque at tip off. Also, I have WSP Y coming tomorrow. Will I notice a sound change? Also, WSP says this is the big hp gainer for the VG/VE--but I cannot find a VG dyno. How much power am I looking at? Oh, and is the sound just a loud tone, or raspy and buzzy, like a 4 cylinder (this is without the resonator)?

Not quite any aftermarket muffler is going to be loud. My Ravin gives off a nice deep tone, that isn't that loud. The matrix on my Protege 5 is louder, and all I did to that car was put the muffler on.

None of the piping was upgraded like I had done to my Maxima. I run 2.5" all the way from my cat, to my muffler. I'm hoping that the WSP Y-Pipe will make my exhaust alot louder.

Check my site (link in sig) for a link to my sound clip.

I have stock Y, no cat, 22" long resonator, 2.5" cruch bent exhaust to a Dynomax super turbo muffler.

It is very close in sound to the GReddy exhaust for a fraction of the cost.

I had to get one because MrGone's sounded so freaking nice

Definitely the best sounding exhaust I have heard on an import car.

That muffler looks sweet. But I like the dual tip on my Ravin.

sounds kinda like mine, cept mine is a bit deeper and has some air flow sound from the intake pipe..

but my max is almost bone stock. All i have is a HAI, and an aftermarket muffler.. plus a leaking flex section on stock Y.. haha...

i've put in an order for a WSP Y and it should be on its way here now. I'll be looking forward to that. One question tho.. does the WSP Y bolt right on to the stock cat?

Your idle almost sounds like mine. But your tone is higher than what mine is during the rev.

It will. It will make a big increase in the sound levels

Yes, it does bolt right to it. It isn't a hard install at all--I did it today. The sound is very nice; it adds some engine noise to my custom intake sound. I really am happy with it--plus the hp gain was pretty solid. I am going to grab a carsound 2.5" cat this weekend and have a shop put that in. They can fix some leaks I have because of two problem bolts while they are there. I think I am going with the Magnaflow, since it is the cheapest. Unless somebody has a hookup for a better muffler cheap?

I'm not so worried about volume, since I've owned many a loud car. I still positive this car will never be as loud as my last two Mustangs. I just want a nice sound, with good volume--not too loud, not too quiet. I guess I'll hold out for more clips before I decide to go with a resonator or not.

How cheap is the magnaflow muffler?

There's only one place up here that sells it, and I only take my cars there to get the piping done. I've never really payed much attention to the displays.

There are a couple of really cheap ones on ebay right now ($5 and $7), but you can count on paying almost $100 for just the muffler usually.

You are running a true dual straight pipe on the maxima? I'm sure it sounds good. Don't listen to the low end loss crap. There is so much more to it than that.
