over heated

on my way home from work today i noticed that my car sounded like it was dragging tin cans. i noticed that the tempguage was at the highest possible reading of hot. i opened all my air vents and turned my heat on high. luckily i made to about a 5min walk to my house before the car started smookingand the engine stoped i lost powersteering and everything else. i opened the hood and out came a puff of smoke. the belts were drenched and smelled like burt rubber. i the noticed that it looked like a pulley had fallen off.does any one have any possible idea what coul have possible caused this to happen.

Sounds pretty bad to me. First thing I would say is that as soon as you see your temp guage go up, pull over and shut it down. Overheating causes lots of nasty problems, that get worse as you keep driving. But, from the limited info I see here, it sounds like you may have had a problem before that that caused you to over heat. Some of the smoking was probably the belts melting and breaking, which is why you lost power steering. Maybe something seized up, like the pulley that you say is missing- where is it located on the engine? Maybe your water pump bearings siezed ???

Well, now you need a motor or heads at the very least.
Congratulate yourself on killing a motor with ignorance

Hmm lets see, if a pulley looked like it had fallen off, and your car overheated, there's more wrong than just hoses and thermostat. Your water pump is gone too.

Pegged Temp Guage+ Tin-can banging= New Motor.
At the very least, you are looking at pulling heads to check the extent of the damage. As for calling Brian ignorant, I would apoligise. Quickly.

I don't think you'll know for sure if you "lucked out" until you get it back together and see if it actually runs. That "tin can" rattling noise would be my main concern.

And one other word of advice- If you want to continue to get help here, you might want to let some comments slide. May have been a harsh comment, but everybody gets testy once in a while. Just my opinion.

If your lucky you just blew a headgasket or two, but you probably warped the heads as well. Aluminum motors dont like overheating, so I would start saving my money if I was you.

Belts dont just come off like that. What most likely happened was your water pump seized, fubard the belt, and it overheated to the point of blowing a radiator hose. Thats bad.

Same thing happened to my friend's truck, but he has a solid iron "retarded 350", aka 4.3l v6. New water pump and radiator (it actually broke off the hose barb when the hose blew off) and it was good as new.
