What causes transmission slippage?
This probably has been discussed and gone over many times, but I can't use the dumb search feature thats there, but doesn't work.
Okay, I have a 1992 GXE (Auto), and just lately I've noticed that my 1st-2nd gear switch rev high but not switch. The 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th switch really hard. What causes only the 1st-2nd gear slip, and is there any way that I can fix it?
Now, should I get a used tranny from the junkyard, or should I get this one rebuilt?

It could be as simple as a low fluid problem, a sticking valve in the valve body, a bad shift solenoid, or as complicated as a bad clutch pack or seal. I'd try a simple fluid change first, then maybe having the valve body/solenoids checked. The valve body is accessed through the metal cover on top of the tranny and you don't even have to drain the fluid to get to it. Otherwise you are probably looking at a rebuild or replacement.

don't waste your time or money on a rebuilt transmission. Personally, i don't trust rebuilts due to the fact that they have hundreds and hundreds of moving internal parts. If you have a lazy mechanic rebuilding it for you; you're bound to get a tranny not operating at it's best.
Do what i did, I got a low mileage tranny from Japan for 1/3 the price of a rebuilt. And on top of that, I didn't have to wait a week for it to be rebuilt. I installed my tranny the same day I got it.
So far, it's been a week since it's been installed and I love it.
