Installing pioneer radio in 94 maxima gxe active system

Hi all, I am about to install a new radio in my 94 maxima gxe. It has the active speaker system.

Is there anything I need to know before I install a new pioneer radio as well as front and rear speakers?

Can I use the amp the stock rear clairion speakers are hooked up too?

I am new to this and would appreciate any help that could possibly same me time and a headache.

By the way how do I disassemble the rear speakers to put new ones in? I tried quickly to see how them came apart but they were stubborn and Ii almost broke the plastic casing. Does the grill come off or do you have to remove the whole back panel?

Thanks in advance.

Go to that page. It is really easy to do.

You will want to bypass that amp in the back. I've heard of many people who didn't get any sound out of the rear speakers when they installed a new head unit and the reason was because they didn't bypass that amp. As far as I know it's only about 25 watts anyway. The built in amp on your head unit is sure to be better.

There are instructions on that site on how to bypass it but I'll quote it anyway:

Here's what Matt Blehm (a maxima audio expert) said about wiring the speakers for the Non-Bose (ACTIVE SPEAKER) components.
once you remove the amp, you'll have a connector with a dozen or so wires. the ones you need to connect are:

Large/ Small
----------------------
Green/ Black-pink
Yellow/ black-yellow
Orange/ Orange
Blue/ Light Green
Just cut and connect those wires and you're good to go. What I did was cut the wires right where they go into the connector, stripped em, twisted em together and put a wire nut on em. You can also crimp them or whatever you prefer.

Good luck.

Wire nut?! WIRE NUT?!?!
Please tell me you didn't.
Wire nuts have NO place in a car. use a crimp-type or solder connection w/ shrink wrap.

Thank you for all of your help. Looks like pulling the rear speakers can be a bit of a pain. Is there now way to install new speakers without pulling the seat and rear lid?

Thanks again, Donovan
