Please help me diagnose this problem
Hi,
I have a '92 Maxima GXE. I recently replaced the front struts with KYB GR-2's. Before I replaced it, the lower spring seat on the driver side strut had ruptured, making the coil spring drop to the kuckle... Anyway, replaced the struts and now the suspension seems fine (replaced struts, strut mounts, boots, and bearings). I also made the mistake of replacing the rear drums and shoes to new ones.
The reason why I say mistake is, because now the car at highway speeds (50-70mph) vibrates during braking and I can't tell what it's from.
It manifests as shudders in the steering wheel, but when I try to pull the parking brake lever up to try to engage the drum brakes only, I feel faint pulsations.
I thought perhaps warped rotor (from the coil spring dropping), so I replaced front rotors with new ones, and got new brake pads. Still vibrates like crazy during braking at highway speeds.
I am afraid of replacing every suspension part until I find the problem, because I cannot afford the $$$. I did order new lower control arms with ball joints, because one of the symptoms of shimmy under braking is control arms, but haven't received them yet. I also read that bad bearings could also cause braking shimmy. I tried to see if there was axial play in the front and rear wheels, but didn't feel any. Furthermore, I am praying that it's not the bearings, because I have no means to press the bearings, and I can't afford to buy new hub assemblies. Also, I have no means of pressing the hub on to the knuckles either...
I am at a loss on what to do next. I would be greatful any advice that I can get...
