Air/Fuel Ratio

Well I pulled out my plugs yesterday to see how they were doing and found them to be white. Which in most cases means i'm running lean. However I know white could also mean a vaccum leak (that could explain a few things i've had happen in the last year or so).
Anyways,
I could've sworn I was running a tad rich though because I could smell it from the exhaust even after the car had warmed up.
Anyways I'm now starting to become a tad obsessive over this air/fuel mixture shiet.
So I need to ask a couple of quick questions.
Besides using my sniffer, or the gay ecu air/fuel diagnostics...is there any other way I would go about checking my air/fuel mixture?
I've used the ecu method and it never seems to give me anything but an okay code. I know it's not okay because I've purposely ran it over rich or lean just to see if the ecu would detect it. I used a spare iacv of course.
I'm comtemplating getting an air fuel gauge but how accurate are they?

Thanks for any help ppl.

i believe the stock ECU program runs your motor a tad on the lean side to help fuel economy.

you should post a pick of the plug

dont waist your time on a A/F guage unless its a wideband

Yes, but only at idle or low rpms. At high rpms and WOT the air/fuel should be going rich for safety.
