Emission Problems

Hi, i'm new to the maxima community. I am here to seek help. My brother gave me his 94 Maxima auto transmission. Ive only been driving it for a few weeks. Recently the check emissions light has come on and off frequently. When it comes on the car becomes shaky and it accelerates really slow. Sometimes the light only comes on for a few minutes and other times it stays on for a long time. When the light comes on I turn overdrive off which seems to help the problem a little. If overdrive is off the car becomes a little less shaky but is still slow. Is this a serious problem? Does anyone know what is causing the problem and an estimated price to fix it? Thanks.

Could be an 02 sensor????/

Take it to some place like Autozone, they will do a free scan of your computer and pull out the error codes that are turning your check engine light on. They also give you a nice little printout with an explanation (they want you to get the parts from them)...

I'm sorry, my mistake. There is only one check light, but the car manual called it Check Emission light instead of Chek Engine light.

I've yet to see an o2 on our cars trip the check engine light.
and autozone (around here at least) only does OBDII cars. not OBDI like ours
