Blew a Headgasket
if anyone can shed some light on tips or knowledge on replacing them it would be great.
-do i have to take the engine out? on my eclipse i had to cause a mount was int he way and the bolts were to long to take out
-can i get away with sliping the timing belt off the cams?
-anyone have any cheap things i should do while i have them out, i know im going to replace all the serpentine belts, i just bought them a couple days ago. (spark plugs, rotor and cap also)
-im going to replace the broken studs i have on the exhaust
-tools, what sizes......i have the but would be great to know them before hand and if i need short and deep sockets......
-any more usefull info is appreciated

- the engine can stay in there
- you need to take the timing covers off and take the timing belt off
- you might think about getting them checked for flatness and possibly get a valve job... not very cheap though
- good idea
- i believe the head bolts are 10 mm allen style. you're best bet is to get a piece that goes on the end of a 3/8" socket wrench with an extention
- get a headgasket kit. it contains all of the gaskets necessary for doing a full head job (no... not that type of head job... an engine head job )
if you don't have a repair manual definitely get one and follow it very closely. you don't want to mess up on something like this. there are even the smallest things that are important like getting the head bolt washers the correct way (not kidding on that). be absolutely sure to torque everything to the exac spec.
lastly, good luck!

thanks for takign the time to answer them
-i dont think the valves or head besides mileage, but wont know till i take them off
-man i wish they didnt have alley wrenches, now i got to buy them for a rachet like you say, i refuse to take them out with little hand helds
-yea i was thinking about the headgasket kit, i believe it comes with the head gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets.
-i have a torque wrench and a friend with a repair manual
i want to do this right and good, but at a cheap route cause i planned on buying a rebuilt engine in around 6 months or less

i just recentally did head gaskets on an 89 gxe and its pretty simple but take into consideration having a valve job done, replace the timing belt, maybe replace water pump, and if you over heated your engine then you should determine why the engine over heated if you dont already know or you will be back to where you are in no time and you should be prepared to replace some exhaust manifold studs also

1. I never insinuated that you couldn't. most of the questions you're asking would be solved if you read the procedure in the cervice manual- which you'll have to buy anyway in order to get the torque specs and head bolt tightening sequences.
2. If you know what you're doing, like you say you do, then you wouldn't be asking questions like that.
