continuing starter problems

continuing starter problems
You may recall my intermittent starter failure. I have changed the starter relay (no help) and had the starter checked. One shop said it was fine, the other said it the starter was bad and went through an elaborate explanation why it was intermittent. Then he checked for price and noticed he was talking about the wrong brand of starter.
So, the problem continues. I have noticed that the problem seems to occur in the mornings (cooler and more humid) and not in the afternoon. I have gotten it to start on an occasion by jumping the battery (which would not work on several occassions) and by yanking on the shifter handle while turning the key
So i want to cahge the transmission park/neutral switch. Can anybody tell me where its located? Is it inside the console or down on the transmission ?

I sometimes have the starting problem on my 90 GXE. I turn the key, and nothing starts, but all dash lights turn on. Then I apply the brake, and move the shifter from park to drive and back, and then it starts right up.
This same problem has happend on 2 3rd gens for me. But it always starts right up after shifting through gears.

shifter bushing
The shifter bushing was replaced right before I bought the car (several years ago). What it would do then though, is not go into gear when you put the transmission in drive.
This starting problem appears to be affecting several others on the site.
My wife's Gen IV does something similiar that is discussed on that board. So I guess I'll be fighting that pretty soon.

right on the flip side it might not go into park all the way either. so it might be in park and your key in out...but the tranny might not see it that way.

starting in neutral
I have tried to start the car in neutral when its doing its thing, and that has helped a few times but not always. It sometimes helps if I move the shifter from park to neutral to park, etc while turning the key. Thats pretty awkaward. But usually it does nothing until it wants to start in the afternoon. Sometimes it won't start for days, then it starts fine for weeks. THe past couple of weeks though I have noticed the starter gear seems to be dragging some when i release the key. If I was keeping the car I would replace the starter with no question. I'm just tired of buying parts for a surplus car.

i had a similar problem last fall on my 92. i tried a lot of different things to solve the problem. i eventually gave up and decided to rewire the ignition myself.
there's a wire that comes from the starter that's white with a red stripe it runs into a plug near the battery, then runs into the relay box by the battery. from there it runs through a relay or two into the ignition. this wire is the ignition signal/remote source. so i connected a seperate wire to the ignition signal and ran it through the firewall directly to signal wire on the actual ignition. since then i haven't had a problem. i'm certain that it was short somewhere throughout the harness. but it was near impossible to find so i just hard wired it.
