Steering Rack Question

There's some play in my steering wheel and when I had it checked out the mechanics told me I need a new steering rack and it would be about 450. What is the average price of a new rack and pinion? I'm trying to get it replaced before I do my inspection so that everything will be in top shape and I wanna make sure I don't get

I hope that $450 is with labor. Cause the first place I checked had the part for $198. Here's the link to check for yourself. http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/nc...grpid=82801905

I'm glad I live somewhere where there's no inspections.

I've seen racks get changed out of mitshu's and they had to drop the engine! But laying under a max for so long I THINK that it can pulled out of the side. I need to get a new one at sometime. I don't have any play, but there I don't have anymore boots left.

they take about 2-3-4 hours to swap, depending on the tools available.
pull the y pipe just so you have room to get to the bolts, and it's not too bad. I did it last weekend actually.

if the rack is still good, you can just replace the boots

Ya and you should do it before it goes bad.

The rubber shims for the mounts for my rack are kind of torn up. How much work is it to get at the mounts? I'm assuming that I won't have to pull the thing out of the car, just pull the mounts and rubber shims out, then put new ones in with the rack sort of in place.

yup.. that's about it.

it's best to remove the Y pipe so you have some room to work in there.. once you pull it, you'll see the 5 bolts holding the rack to the firewall. remove them and then you can remove the old rubber bushings.. the driver side comes out easily. the pass side, you'll have to slide it toward the center of the car so you have room to get the metal bracket off. it's very tight clearances in there, but it's possible to do (this is what I did last weekend.).

be ready to bang up some knuckles and get dirty- it's a fight, but it's doable..
