something like $40 or $42, they are 6.5" speaker pods...if you want a 4x6" speaker you could get a stock pod out of a gxe without bose

They're $35 shipped, and made from MDF

As for them not being hard to make - that's true they're not that difficult to make skill wise. It's the 'r&d' that's the 'hard' part and that you're paying for. They usually become 'not that hard to make' after people buy them from me or see pics and in essence have a stencil to copy. Similar to how Matt's ground kit becomes so easy after people see it. Not that Zoltan did so because I dont recall selling to him, but that's the usual scenario

well worth it, they are nice and work very well. Mine have been in the car well over a year with no problems.

I wouldn't recommend trying to put 6x9s in your front doors, though. If you want that much sound, get some high end seperates in 6.5" for the doors and put the 6x9s in the rear deck.

I made my own back when I was a n00b for my old black car, but I didn't have anyone to copy and I didn't know people made them (and didn't think about stuffing 6.5's in the stock bose housing).

It took me a few hours and a couple tries to get the right shape, size and fitment. People think its really easy but it isn't until you have the template like James said. One main problem I had was the door panel wouldn't fit back on right because the wood was too thick on top. Anyway, its alot easier to have james make them, and hey, it makes buying books less painful (oh and his look 11ndy billion times better than mine).

Has anybody been able to get good sound out of a cheap aftermarket setup? My rear Bose speakers are blown, so I'm low on bass. If I could piece together a low cost setup that I could wire myself, I would be down.

are you still using your stock HU?

If you are, then you can pretty much forget it.

If you get an aftermarket HU, you can just run decent 6x9s in the stock location in the back deck for decent sound and buy james92se's pods and get some two way 6.5s for the front.

From there you can upgrade to seperates later on in the front and add amp/subs in the trunk.

I went ahead and put in an amp and wired the front speakers (I have 2-ways in the door) from the trunk. That way, when I get seperates, I don't have to rewire everything, like I would if I had run straight off the HU.

I went the super cheap route initially, too. I bought some used Diamond Audio 2-ways from an .org member and I found some Infinity Reference 6x9s on ebay. They are still working after a year, so I am happy. Got me by when I didn't have much money.

if you wanna stay relativly cheap and have decent sound, get a 6.5" component set up front and amp it, then just put new 6x9s in the back for rear fill, thats what i have and it sounds awesome, i also used james' pods, fitment was excellent

My plan was to get a new deck and run off that power. Will I be able to get decent sound off deck power? I know the newer decks are kicking out over 20-25watts rms regularly, so I figured it would be plenty for some budget speakers. But I've never heard aftermarket 6x9s in a car--I hear they are supposed to be bass heavy?

This thread sucks, big time lol. Before I was perfectly happy with my Kenwood Tape Deck and no front speakers, but now I want to get a new(er) head unit and some Diamonds like Chris has (just ask him, I was pestering him last night hehehe).

Brian, I dont have front speakers in either, I would but I traded my old 6.5" Infinity References (and a Bazooka amp) for a 1farad cap and a PPI Art a40.4 (because I'm jealous of Matt's setup lol).

John(ny), Alpines V-Drive is pretty nice, Red92MaxSE has one and so does antonthegrey. Anton has 5.25" References and it powers them really nicely, Chris has 6.5" Diamond M3 or M6 (I dont know, and he cant remember lol) and they are awesome (I want a pair hehehehe)

I love diamond, but you need amps to make them sound right. We'll see. I may go for Infinity. Nice, warm sounding speaker. Who has gotten good bass out of 6x9 and what brand?

An amp will sound way better than the built in one on the HU.
Look at the specs on the amp.
Most of what I run is usually rated >.01% THD, which probably way better than what my HU is rated at.
of course my amp is TECHNICALLY only 22.5 watts per channel

Actually, I have the lowest model of Diamond Audio M3 coaxial speakers and they don't need much power. I have a PG amp to them, but the gain is at about 1/3. They are not as good as seperates, but I think they are some of the best sounding coaxial speakers I have heard. I also have them crossed over (amp has built in x-over)so only the higher stuff is coming through. If you had a strong HU and probably some kind of x-over or bass blocker, they would probably not need an amp.

If you want quality sound from your 6x9s (including pretty good bass), you will probably have to go for something a little expensive like the high end Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, Boston Acoustic or Polk Audio. Unless you have an amp, though, you aren't going to run these speakers to their full capability. Like I said, I have Infinity Reference 6x9s, but I use them for rear fill. They are pretty loud and sound OK running off of my deck power. When I take the sub out, it still sounds good, just not as much bass...

I had the M3s and loved them. At the time, however, my deck wasn't giving enough power to them. They sounded much better with an amp. I had an eclipse deck giving about 15-17 watts rms--not nearly enough.

Hello everybody,
this is my first post in here although I've send a few private messages before. Anyways, try the Delco speakers out of a GM car(the 6x9). My wife has a 94 Berreta and they simply sound unbeliavable. I bought my brand new pair from ebay for...$1 plus $9 shipping. It is simply amazing. You should know that these speakers are 10 omhs but for the last three years after I put a pioneer cd player in her car there were no problems. The pioneer fills them just perfect. The speakers are great on bass and some highs but have zero mids but if you have good mids in the front that should not be a problem. Trust me, you'll be shocked. Thanks
