Antifreeze drain plugs
Antifreeze drain plugs
Need to do a coolant change on my 92SE. I'm just wondering how many plugs there are to remove to get a thorough flush? Besides the fill & drain plug where are the other ones? I believe I saw one on the front of the block right around the oil filter location, looks like trouble to get to. Are there any breather plugs up top too?
Engine Coolant Plugs
Yes there is a venting bolt on the top end, left side (as you face engine). It's in front of the throttle assembly at the very top of the engine and behind the front valve cover. This is very handy for venting the engine as you refill it with coolant. No waiting for a tiny weep hole to vent through the thermostat.
As for the block plugs, I wouldn't take them out, unless the engine or radiator is really full of crud. I would just flush it and refill it. Only a fraction of the coolant is caught in the block when you drain the radiator.

coolant drains
When I changed the cooolant in my 89, I was determined to remove the plugs and completely drain the block. After fighting with the front plug and getting less than quart out, I said forget it (among other things).

Thanks, I am changing the coolant today and was thinking of maybe getting those drain plugs off, but for a quart or two I'll just flush a few times.

about a gallon (maybe a bit more) comes out from the radiator, the rest it still in the system.
yeah, if you just run water through the system several times and maybe run some of the preston flush chemical you should be good to go. just make sure you catch all the water, even if it looks clean - even diluted, antifreeze is pretty nasty
