Maybe once every week or so

I went to Sonic last night and saw a VE auto parked in one of the "stalls". I could hear the clacking as soon as I pulled into the place and she was parked at the back

That's funny, Keelan...

my JDM started clacking a little bit yesterday. It was fine all the way home from Seattle and on Monday. Then yesterday when I started it up to go home from work it did it a little. Then more when I started it to change the oil. I changed the oil and it still does it, but it goes away quickly. Oh, well

I have driven it about 300 miles and it has already had two Toyota filters in it. I just changed the oil with Mobil 1 5w-30 and Jeff had a Toyota filter on the initial oil run through with Castrol GTX.

bah.. just put castrol GTX in it and change at 3k. it's cheaper and good quality stuff.

mine have been clattering for 60k miles now. when I drive the !)@( out of the car it goes away for a few days, then comes back.. I used to have them grounded and I'd un-ground them for track days.. last week the ground strap snapped off and it hasn't made a sound yet.

My original engine had the VTC problem bad and it had been that way for maybe 40k or so. Initially the JDM had no clattering, so I had my hopes up pretty high it would last for a while before starting up.

I decided to go with Mobil 1 because 1) it's cheap at Costco and 2) last year I only drove my car about 1600 miles. I feel a little better putting in synthetic oil over a longer duration. I will probably change it again in the spring, just for fun. Now the thing is all synthetic (AMSoil in the tranny).

Mine are just recently starting to tick a tad bit on startups where the car has been sitting for a day or so. It goes away quick though and it's bound to be another year or so before it's embarrasingly quiet, and I should have my new engine in there before it's a problemo. My uber quiet VTC's were fun though while it lasted these past two years

When I start my car after letting it sit for about 2-3 days, I hear something clicking for like 3 seconds and the oil light flashing. Then both the light and the clicking go away after 3 seconds???? Somehow this only started after I replaced my t.belt, and all the seals. I also use Nissan filter, and 10w-30 Penzoil. Anyone???????

1992 - 148,xxx miles - Clicks and Clacks (like the car talk guys) all day long... makes me wonder sometimes if somebody swapped in a diesel when I wasnt looking....

1994 - 134,xxx miles - clicks at start up sometimes... occasionally I will get a quiet click/clack when warmed up

...and still the honda never knows what hit him...

I'm not quite sure what the VTC clatter even sounds like, something around my timing chain is pretty noisy but i wouldnt really describe it as "ticking" like i hear people talkin about the VTCs. i never notice it when hood isnt open. is this the start of the VTC problem or is it something else? i have 137k

I'd describe it more as a "clack" than a "tick". Maybe I'll record a sound bite with my cell phone or something, lol.

Its a horrendous clacking sound. If you've got clacking VTCs, there is no question about it

It kind of sounds like a diesel.

I also have another set of them (rebuilt) and I might just set them aside for later.

hmm, still not exactly sure

i dont know how annoying the VTcs are exactly, but i pretty much hope its the VTCs im hearing so i at least know its not a timing chain trouble that i should be concerned about

If it sounds like there is a midget inside your valve cover banging on the inside of it, its VTC's. Seriously, I want to kill that bastard.

anywho, it is a distictive clack, no click about it. clack clack clack.

it also only sounds like a diesel when your inside the car, when you open the hood it doesnt lol.

The other funny thing is when I start my car up cold, it pretty much doesnt make any noise, warm starts its pretty much a given to make noise.

Hey your in Minneapolis I bought my car there a week ago

Timing chain should be hard to hear, or at least on my engine. I only hear and contant hum from my engine bay, followed by a slighty hint of valvetrain noise. My VTC's don't make noise, but according to the previous owner, he had them replaced so I got lucky. I have heard a clacking noise from a VE in town, i'm pretty sure his VTC's are going and the sucker has a big FOR SALE sign on his car
