1991 Maxima AC
1991 Maxima AC
My air conditioning didnt work in my Max when i bought it. It has the R12 stuff in it. So i went and bought a R134 retrofit kit and tried putting the adaptors on the high and low side of the ac system. The high side fit fine but the low side adaptors wont fit... none of them. I went to Auto Zone and they tried all the adaptors they had and none fit. They said that it was because it was a nissan
Any ideas of what to do to fill my ac system with R134? thanks.

1 if you have R12 in it, you have to have a MACS Certified person remove it before doing anything.
2. have it charged off the high side though you'd probably have to take it to a shop, unless you have the machine at home

I simply got the kit, screwed on the adaptors, drove to my mechanic's shop and had them charge off the 'old' R12, took it back home and filled it up with the R134a - carefully, of course...
Now, if - Logik - you're deciding that it'd be a heckuva lot cheaper to just purge the R12 right in the driveway rather than take that drive and have it done "pro-style", DON'T!!!! That's where what Brian said comes into play.
Maybe your threads are damaged, which is why your adaptors won't fit. Did you check 'em?? That whole "...because it's a Nissan" thing is just someone's way of blowing smoke up your @$$, IMHO. They probably drive a Ford Festiva, too...

What's the name of the kit you bought? I got mine at K-Mart, so maybe it's a different kit. That's always a possibility, too...
Food for thought.... do the dishes...
The kit is for systems that are empty and under vaccum.
unfortunately they are very misleading, my uncles shop does the retro & recharge for like $125 which isn't that much more than what one would have to pay for Removal of the R12 (has to be stored , can't just vent it + EPA BS) retro kit ($35 with 2 cans R134a and oil) + Vaccum (which should actually be held from step 1)
of course that is my .02
Companies make products that aren't always useful, but people like to buy their own parts anyhow

Do you know for sure why the A/C isn't working. There's no point in dumping R134 in there only to find out that there's a leak in the condensor and all that R134 will soon be contributing to global warming. It's probably too late for you, but if the system is not working only because it's low on charge (due to a very minor leak over the last 13 years) I would bit the bullet and pay the extra to have it topped up with R12 rather than doing the R134 retrofit.

R12 runs around $30 a can (which is only 12 ozs) and you need to be certified to buy it.
The 134a is like $3.50 a can and no certification required.

Actually, they both contribute to global warming (perhaps one more than the other). The real problem (and difference between the two) is that R12 eats holes in the ozone layer. R134 does not.
