that black thing in the trunk...

So there was thread a while back about the thing that sits under the trunk carpet directly behind the rear seats, but i cant find it at all. So does anyone know what it is or what it does? OR can i just take that thing out.

Thanks

Gregg

SE's didn't come with those. It's a GXE thing that weighs about 20 lbs. It's usless. These guys are just messing around with the Newbs.

Big rubber useless thing in the trunk of GXEs. As far as I an tell, it's main function is to make your car heavy and slow.

20lbs more in the trunk will make it neither heavy nor slow (which the gxe already is). If anything, it'll minimally correct the understeer bias.

But how on Earth it will achieve that consistently with any combinations of load in the trunk, on the floor and with the people on the seats? There is no way that weight can serve as a correction under all circumstances! Only under some...

Also in that case why is it only found in GXE's. If you wanted to correct such a problem then why not give it to the sportier SE maxima's.

Because it doesn't and it's purpose is to dampen noise.

Because it's not in there for that purpose, but like jeff said to dampen noise. They delibarately produce the cars with an understeer bias for safety purposes (let alone the fact that fwd's are naturally understeering). That's why I said "minimally" meaning you won't notice it; adding any weight to the rear will correct understeering but only to the extent of its mass.

Are you sure? Imagine if you load the rear with a really heavy weight. ie.. huge speaker box etc.. Then imagine if you took out a large amount of weight. You think adding weight would make the rear oversteer more or less? Making the rearend very light would tend to make it more slide happy IMHO. ie.. a truck

We had this discussion in my rear parallel links thread (can't search). One would think that little weight in the rear would make the rear end slide out easier, but unless you have a really stiff rear suspension it will be a hard-to-control slide out with the corresponding speed loss. I came to this conclusion through a few close encounters with the ditch. Adding rear weight to such a car will make the rear end slide out harder, however it will reduce the understeer itself and balance out the car more, i.e. less plowing in a curve.
