how do you know the tranny isnt going just be cause the problem is only when its cold? It may be the early signs of aa bigger problem, but if you let the car sit and warm up does it still do it?

Ok my auto would hold the gear too long on 1 to 2 and then ****** it hard when shifting. Ok buddy hate to say but thats early signs of the great nissan auto on the way out the door. You will have other signs later. Mine did that and then about 10,000 miles later it started sliping in all gears a little a lot when its cold. Well now I haveundefined

1 3 5
2 4 R undefined

So now not so many problems

I have the same problem and was told by a trans shop it was the torque converter, the trans has 270,000 and has did it for about 5,000 miles. I will drive it until it goes and replace it with a rebuilt or low mileage one. It does not seem to be getting worse. Good luck and if you have it flushed and filter replaced it will proably do more harm than good because it stirs up more sediments. Thats what I have been told. I hope some one can post some experiences with tranny flushes?

it's not unusual (at least around here) for a trans to not want to shift when it's cold.
Heck my brother's cavalier did that towards the end of its life.
my tranny just engaged with a massive thunk from a stop sign. think that's a bad sign

I'll say! I only got slightly over 140k on my original. The good 'ol RE4F02A strikes again. Worst auto tranny I've ever had experience with next to the supremely p.o.s trannies they put in the late model Taurus SHO. Now my rebuild is on its way out, and i can tell because in the morning it has similar symptoms (mine only shifts hard for about the first 5 minutes) and has started slipping after prolonged city driving.

Automatic transmission: If the transmission does not shift properly until warmed up, make sure it is filled only with Nissanmatic "C" transmission fluid. (all)...this is what the site says....here is the site..its on the bottem under the heading TROUBLE SPOTS!

"Clutch: The clutch plate, pressure plate, and release fork must be replaced if there is clutch judder. (1990-92)"

Well, that explains my issue with my '92.

i had the same problem when mine use to be Automatic. i had the experience of takin' it to a shop and have them flush the tranny and it didn't help at all, in fact, after the flush my tranny spilled all the tranny fluid out through the seal and just died on me after about 2,500 miles after doin' the flush. then i had it rebuilt and drove it up to Indiana lived up there for only 5 months and again it died on me after movin' back to Miami, Fl. with about 7,000 miles after the rebuilt. then i got a used one from a junkyard that came out of a '94 GXE for $400 and 80,000 miles on it "so they told me". my car ran like a beast with that tranny and then it started givin' me the same symptoms and then just died after 5,000 or so miles and just stayin' in neutral in all gears. so i decided to finally do the 5-speed swap and hasn't given me any problems since then.
